My 16-year-old cat has a bump on her ear. Is it a tumor or cyst?

Please understand that it's impossible to say what this lesion is with 100% certainty without examining cells from this lesion microscopically. With that said, Tigra's lesion looks as though it could be a cyst. Most cysts are benign lesions. Many rupture and some refill at a later date, but they won't go away completely on their own. It would be best to have Tigra examined by her vet within the next month or so, or sooner if it's changing dramatically or bothering her. Until her appointment, keep a close eye on it for changes, but don't worry about applying any topical medications.

That unfortunately should be checked out by a vet in person, especially if it's growing in size and looking more inflamed than usual, as this could indicate something such as an infection or growth that requires treatment. Typically, a vet will be able to take a sample of the area to determine the exact cells present and what treatment is needed. Until you can get to the vet, placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Sebastian may help keep him from rubbing or pawing at it to help it heal. Keeping the area clean and dry may also help. This is a skin growth and is not going to go away without surgery. That being said, I’m not sure I would rush into surgery on an older cat for what is most likely a benign growth that is more of a nuisance than it is a health problem. I would monitor it, keep it clean and if it is really a constant bother to her, discuss the potential of surgery to remove it with your veterinarian.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. You'll want to continue to monitor the growth and if you notice any changes in size, shape, or color visit you local Veterinarian and request a fine needle aspiration. This will allow your doctor to identify the cell type of the growth and proceed with an appropriate treatment plan.

These are most likely ceruminous cysts, which are essentially cysts filled with ear wax. We see this condition with a disorder known as cystadenomatosis in cats. These can be in the ear canals, on the ear flaps, around the eyes, mouth and occasionally the anus. Unfortunately there is no medical treatment for the underlying disease. If they extend down into the canals, the only treatment is total ear canal removal. However, the individual cysts can be removed with a surgical laser. I recommend taking Mario to the vet, so they can provide and accurate diagnosis and assess the extent of these. I hope that helps.
