My cat is limping, not eating, and breathing fast. Is it an emergency?

As your cat hasn't been eating and is limping it is best to schedule a veterinary appointment ASAP. The limp could be caused by a number of things including injury to the leg, such as a break or sprain, wound or infection from a bite or scratch, or muscle or nerve damage. If the limb is hurt severely enough or if infection is present it may make your cat not want to eat. Until you can get to the vet, limit all activity to prevent further injury to the limb, and try to entice eating by warming up some wet food or adding some warmed boiled chicken to your cat's food. However it is necessary to schedule a vet appointment ASAP.

Hello Anisa! Limping means he is in pain, and pain could make him lethargic as well. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him, as many human ones are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I think you should take him into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose why he is in pain, and can treat him. I hope this helps!

Hi there. A couple things could be going on with Sam. He could have a soft tissue injury, a fracture, or he could have an abscess in his leg or foot that has not come to the surface yet. If you’re able to take him to the vet on emergency today it would just help him feel more comfortable more quickly but if that is something that is difficult to do you should be OK to wait until tomorrow because he’s acting normally otherwise. Poor Murphy! If she is not eating or drinking she could indeed be injured, and should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Please search for a 24 hour veterinary clinic in your area if your regular veterinarian isn’t available. It is also possible that Murphy could be pregnant, and you will need to see your veterinarian asap to help provide care for this as needed, and consider having her spayed to prevent unwanted litters. Spaying stops the heat cycle, eliminates the risk and cost of unwanted breeding, and early spaying can reduce the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer, as well as reduce the risk of potentially fatal uterine infections and breast cancer. If you are unable to take her to a vet, call your local Humane Society or shelter to see if they can direct you on where to go for help.

Poor guy. If he is limping then I would be concerned about an internal fracture or even infection. I would take him to the hospital right away because if an infection is present you want that treated right away. An infection is possible because of Raymond's symptom of lethargy. Also you want to get him some immediate pain relief if possible.

I would advise that you take Chad to the veterinarian as soon as possible. The clinical signs you are describing are very serious. He could have an obstructed urinary tract or a diabetic emergency. Both are life threatening situations that require medical intervention immediately. Sending my best to you both.

I would recommend that you have Xavier examined by a vet. Limping can be caused by a sprain, a fracture, joint issues, etc. Cats are good at hiding pain, so if you see a limp you can know it is is painful. Also, sleeping more and not purring are often signs of pain. The vet will do an exam and maybe x-rays to determine the most appropriate treatment.
