My cat still limps after disc surgery. Is it nerve damage or pain?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 6 years and 4 months old | 9 lbs

I need help! 6 weeks ago my 6 year old cat had surgery for a herniated disc. I have no idea how it happened, he doesn't go outside. After surgery they told me his right back leg was weak, but should recover. He is still limping. Vet said it may be permanent nerve damage and hasn't responded again. I'm terrified he is in pain. Is there still hope? I can't let him live in pain. He is eating. He has to be sedated at the vet because of aggression with strangers so physiotherapy isn't an option. I'm

Poor Pepe! He could be limping because he is in pain, but he could be limping due to decreased feeling to the leg from the nerve damage. It does take a long time for nerves to fully regrow, so hopefully there still may be a chance that he could regain function in his leg. If you are concerned that Pepe is in pain, then I would speak to your vet about pain medications for him. Do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. It's only been six weeks since surgery, and it can take up to a couple of months for full recovery to occur. I would speak to your vet about possibly putting him on pain medications, and give him a little more time to see if he does regain full function in his leg.

It can happen that a nerve was accidentally hit during the injections, causing the limping. There's a large nerve in the cat's hind limb called the sciatic nerve, and it can be damaged if the needle hits it. It doesn't mean the vet did anything wrong, however. My cat has brachial plexus avulsion. Is leg pain a sign of healing?

How do you know he is still feeling pain? Is not bearing weight or is he actively crying out in pain? They will not bear weight but that is usually because the nerves are not working to control the muscles, not from pain. There is always a chance of recovery if the cat is rested (indoors inside a crate or small room with no running, jumping, etc) and taking anti-inflammatories but sometimes they do not regain function of the leg. If after 4-6 weeks the cat has not regained function of the limb then it should be amputated. Here is a link to an article about this problem in cats. Hope this helps. My cat's leg is limp and paralyzed after a bite. Will it recover?

The only way to better determine Snit's prognosis of regaining use of the affected limb is through repeated neurologic exams. Based on your description, it sounds possible that Snit may be experiencing either radial nerve paralysis or a brachial plexus avulsion. While function of the affected limb may return, this is not the case for every cat and amputation may be considered in some cases. I recommend taking Snit to his vet regularly for neurologic exams to determine if there are any changes. If there is no improvement after 6 or more weeks, it may be best to discuss amputation as an option with your veterinarian. I hope that all goes well!

My cat is still limping and in pain after a vet visit. What now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Wall-W It sounds like you all have been through a lot! I do not think the limp has or had anything to do with his urinary problems. Causes for limping are: torn ligament, luxating knee cap, fracture, abscess, hip dysplasia, back or neck pain and many other things. I'd try to call your Vet to discuss that he is worse with the leg and see if they at least will prescribe pain medications. He does likely need to be recheck and maybe X-rays taken to help determine what is wrong. Cats are very sensitive to medications and can not tolerate human pain medications. My senior cat's limping for weeks after a fall; is her leg serious?

If the lameness has persisted for 3 weeks and you notice that there is a difference in the shape of the shoulder area and leg position, I fear that the injury could be more serious than a sprain. Muscle injuries normally recover in 4-5 days of rest and antinflammatories. I would recommend to have him reassessed, there is a medication that can be given at home prior to the visit to help with the stress, I would ask your vet. Hope this helps !

My cat can't control his leg due to a nerve problem. What should I do?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Without examining Patty it is difficult to say what the cause of the nerve problem is. If there is a history of trauma and this is nerve pain, a drug such as Gabapentin or Amantadine may help. If this is due to trauma, the nerve problem may never resolve and Patty may have this abnormality for life. I would discuss this further with your veterinarian where you are so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! My cat was accidentally kicked. Why is he still having back leg pain?

Yes, he will continue to improve over time. Luckily cats heal well with orthopedic injuries. Let him rest if he wants to and I would discourage jumping for another month so he won't injury the area again since it's not fully healed.
