My cat's leg is limp and paralyzed after a bite. Will it recover?

How do you know he is still feeling pain? Is not bearing weight or is he actively crying out in pain? They will not bear weight but that is usually because the nerves are not working to control the muscles, not from pain. There is always a chance of recovery if the cat is rested (indoors inside a crate or small room with no running, jumping, etc) and taking anti-inflammatories but sometimes they do not regain function of the leg. If after 4-6 weeks the cat has not regained function of the limb then it should be amputated. Here is a link to an article about this problem in cats. Hope this helps. Poor cat! If there is no deep pain present in the back legs then chances are kidding you won't regain function unfortunately. We use the pain is an indicator whether the pet will walk again. However if deep pain is present (kitty moves twitches or flinches when you pinch the back toes), then there is a chance that Katie can regain function of the limbs. However you won't know the extent of the injury without an x-ray. And without an x-ray he won't really know what treatment kitty needs. I unfortunately don't see a good solution here without proper diagnostics. Kittie may be a lost cause at this point without proper medical care for such a traumatic injury like this which undoubtedly involves the spinal cord and/or pelvis. I would highly consider Humane euthanasia for this kittie because the outcome looks bleak.

Often young kittens recover well from injuries given enough time. I would let him do what he wants as long as he’s getting around now. I expect him to improve and not become worse or paralyzed. He may never be perfect but if he’s able to walk and run an isn’t painful then he can live a normal life. Having an exam would be good when you can. He really needs an x-ray of the leg. If there are broken bones sometimes just a cast for few weeks will fix it. The wound does not look that bad but antibiotics may be needed to heal it. I do no think you have to worry about an amputation but if he does need that cats do great with 3 legs. It sounds dramatic but they really adapt well. The first step is getting the diagnosis. Poor Pepe! He could be limping because he is in pain, but he could be limping due to decreased feeling to the leg from the nerve damage. It does take a long time for nerves to fully regrow, so hopefully there still may be a chance that he could regain function in his leg. If you are concerned that Pepe is in pain, then I would speak to your vet about pain medications for him. Do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. It's only been six weeks since surgery, and it can take up to a couple of months for full recovery to occur. I would speak to your vet about possibly putting him on pain medications, and give him a little more time to see if he does regain full function in his leg.

It can happen that a nerve was accidentally hit during the injections, causing the limping. There's a large nerve in the cat's hind limb called the sciatic nerve, and it can be damaged if the needle hits it. It doesn't mean the vet did anything wrong, however. There is a chance the damage can be repaired, as nerves do regrow, but they grow slowly. I would give it time for the nerve to regrow and repair itself, or you could talk to your vet about a referral to a veterinary acupuncturists. There are reports that acupuncture can help with nerve healing and regrowth.

Hello Bobby. I am sorry that Becky is so sick. From your description I would be worried about a few possible causes. If the problem started as a wound from the leg, I would be very concerned about an infection that is spreading. Also, cats can get blood clots that stop the blood flow to the back legs, so if the paralysis is just in the back legs this could be the cause as well. If this is a 'nerve problem', and it is spreading, then it isn't typical of nerve disease. I would be very worried about Becky's chances at survival based on what you are describing. I would talk to your vet about infections and if that seems to be the cause, and pursue bloodwork. You can test for blood flow to the back legs by checking the glucose in the front legs vs. the back legs, and also feel if the back legs are cold to the touch. If they are cold and if the glucose in the back legs is less than that of the front legs, then likely a blood clot to the back legs is present, and you should seriously consider euthanasia as it is a very painful and untreatable condition. If the legs are warm and there is good blood flow, and no infection seems to be present, and Becky seems happy and comfortable otherwise (eating/drinking, no crying, not painful), you can try acupuncture however there aren't good scientific studies about the efficacy of this. I would suggest massaging and frequent range of motion of the back legs, and seeing if return of function occurs. Also, nursing care to ensure Becky is able to urinate and defecate is very important. This is very complicated and without intensive care I worry for Becky's quality of life. You should re-assess with your veterinarian and discuss these options.
