Why is my cat licking her raw, bleeding ankles after vet treatment?

It is hard to know exactly what is needed without an examination though this does sound severe enough that it warrants an evaluation by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check if further surgery is needed or possibly treat for a likely infection and most importantly start Selina on medications for pain as this is likely painful. I would talk to your veterinarian about giving him an injection to help stop the itch. He may also need an Elizabethan collar to stop him from licking. I would recommend not shaving him again. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Henny! I recommend using an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut to prevent licking. Constantly licking will delay healing. She may need antibiotics but it's hard to know with out seeing a picture. You can try putting Mupirocin ointment on twice daily. Clean it with a wet warm cloth and a gentle soap twice daily. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sparkey! If you can post a picture that would really help! If the wound is full thickness a few stitches may be needed. A vet exam is likely the best thing for him. Otherwise I would get an E-collar and have him wear it to prevent licking until the area has healed. You can clean it was water and a mild soap daily and apply a topical triple antibiotic cream as well. I wish Sparkey a speedy recovery!

It looks like Mordred may have been pulling out her sutures. In 2 pictures there are 3 while in the third picture there are only two. I would recommend taking her back to the veterinarian to have them evaluate her and also recommend getting her an elizabethan collar. Typically after this procedure, it is best to keep them quiet for about 10 days but cats are hard to keep quiet so we do the best we can to help them recover. Poor Iris! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. Excessive itching and licking like this with sores and bleeding can be caused by a number of different skin conditions. Iris may have allergies, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). It's also possible that she has fleas, as flea baths are not generally very effective in my experience. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so it's important to get a diagnosis first. I would definitely recommend taking her to the vet in the morning for an exam - he/she can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, you can place an e-collar (plastic cone) on Iris if needed to prevent her from continuing to lick herself and make the sores worse.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any).
