My cat licked a plate with onion on it. Should I be worried?

Hello, I'm sorry to hear that Luna got into the pan with onions. Generally, she would need to eat a few mouthfuls of pure onion to get a toxic amount. A few licks of oil in a pan with onion in it wouldn't cause problems, except maybe some GI distress from excess fat. If she did ingest a toxic amount of onions, it would cause anemia which results in weakness and lethargy. It is unlikely that Pepper will get poisoned by a few licks of broth with a few crushed onion pieces in it. There is no need to take her to an emergency vet. She would have to ingest a lot of onion in order to get anemia from it. Should she get lethargic or get white gums, have your vet give her an exam, but as I said, it is very unlikely that Pepper will get ill.

The very small amount of onion powder in this shouldn't cause your cat any problems. He may get some stomach upset due to getting a decent amount of unfamiliar food, but no more than that. If he should become ill, refuse to eat, etc, get him in to see your vet right away.

It typically takes ingestion of about 0.5% of your pet's body weight of onion to be at risk of onion related toxicity. This calculates out to be approximately 0.15 lbs, or around 2 ounces. Unless your pet ate anything close to that amount or more, it is not recommended to do decontamination for him. This should be just fine. I expect that he may have a little intestinal upset from the grease in the chip, but he won't have gotten enough salt or onion to do him any harm.Keep an eye on him and if he does start feeling sick, get him in to see the vet right away. I've seen lots of cats steal chips and do just fine. Just try to keep them out of his reach.
