My cat licked a canetoad. Is it toxic? Do I need a vet?

Sometimes it can be bad, but it really depends. They can secrete a toxin that is irritating and sometimes toxic, but it depends on the species and how scared they are at that time (they secrete the toxin more when they are scared). You would know if he got any toxin, because they usually start drooling and constantly licking within a couple of minutes of getting the toxin. If you see this, then wash his mouth out with water using a hose for 5 minutes. The toxin can also make them hallucinate, so he may act a little off; but if he acts very lethargic or has tremors, then he should go to the vet immediately for monitoring and treatment. Certain toads (Marine Toad or Colorado River Toad) can be toxic if bitten of ingested. You should rinse Ash's mouth out with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Monitor for excessive drooling, redness or swelling in and around her mouth, increased heart rate or ataxia (wobbly gait). Frogs are less toxic than toads and may cause nothing more serious than some drooling and minor stomach upset.

Some lizard species may be toxic, most are not. Another concern is that Bacchu may become infected with intestinal parasites or liver flukes. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms of serious illness that should be addressed by your veterinarian. If she is drooling excessively, try rinsing her mouth with cool water for at least 15 minutes then monitor for redness or swelling in and around the mouth.

Because Blue only licked it so briefly, I would not rush her into a vet. You may see some drooling and frothing at mouth. I would rinse out her mouth with cool water using a syringe, and keep an eye on her. If she does start acting out of the ordinary, starts having uncoordinated movements, tremors, convulsions, or seizures, I would take her into a vet immediately.

If you want to rinse her mouth out well with water as a precaution and wipe her paws well with water to prevent any more possible ingestion that isn't wrong. If she becomes lethargic, drools, won't eat or in anyway appears abnormal then bring her to the Vet. But based on your description I think she will be fine. Maybe have a discussion with your roommate about this so it won't happen again. I hope this helps!

As long as she didn't ingest the toad, she should be fine. That was quick thinking and the correct action. Most often, a good rinsing with cool water will remedy the foaming. If she is not showing any symptoms now, she is likely in the clear.

Peita should be just fine! Depending on the type of toad, they can have some toxins on their outer surface that taste awful so predators will spit them out if they try to eat them (which sounds exactly like what happened with Peita). Once the source (i.e. the toad) is removed so is the taste. So you do not need to worry!
