Why is my cat still lethargic and unsteady after spay surgery?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 7 lbs

I had 2 cats spayed earlier today, approximately 15 hours ago. One cat is back to her old self already and the other is still extremely lethargic and unsteady on her feet. Is this normal. Do different cats recover more quickly than others after anesthesia?

Great to hear you are choosing to spay and neuter your kitties! Some cats definitely do recover more quickly than others. This could depend on the choice of anesthetic, recovery time, other health issues, and nutrition. 15 hours is definitely a pretty long time and I would have expected a almost full recovery from any anesthetic at that point. Extremely lethargy and unsteadiness could be an indication of a post-op complication, infection, or something different entirely. If Tortilla appears to be stable to you, this isn't necessarily an emergency. However, if you think she is deteriorating, you may want to go ahead and get the emergency hospital on alert to tell them you might be coming in at some point. I would go ahead and check her gums for good color (pinkish and moist) and try to obtain a rectal temperature (over 102.5-103.0 would be considered a fever). If any of these are troubling to you, get her checked out some time soon. Also, I would flip her over and take a good look at her incision to see if it looks inflammed, red, or painful. It is completely true that cats recover at different rates following general anesthesia, just like in people. I would give it a full 24 hrs for Tortilla to improve before worrying just yet. Offer her 1/2 of her normal food amount at her next feeding and keep an eye on her. If you notice any vomiting, diarrhea, pale gums, clean and dry incision line, lack of appetite or continued lethargy then its best to have her re-examined by your vet. However, so far she sounds like she is going through a potentially normal post surgery recovery. Best wishes and take care.

She had a major abdominal surgery, so she will be tired and sore from that as well as effects from anesthesia. I'd keep an eye on her tonight, and if she is still acting this way in the morning, have her seen by a vet. If you are very concerned about her, you can take her into an ER vet now.

I'm not sure how long ago Xenon was spayed, and while you would expect some lethargy and decreased appetite the first 24-48 hours after surgery, the cat should start to perk up after that time. It may not be anything to worry about but I do recommend to call your veterinarian and them know. Pets are commonly very tired for about 24 hours and every pet responds differently. It is important to make sure Kipsico is eating and drinking. If she is not, she may need to go back in today for subcutaneous fluids. My spayed cat is not eating, lethargic, and has strange stool.

After 3 days, the recovery from anesthesia should be gone and she should be feeling like her old self and normal. For her to not have an appetite at this point is concerning something else is going on and it is not part of the surgery recovery. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a check up. They can take her temperature and make sure she is not dehydrated. They can see if there is an infection or a virus that is making her feel bad. Continue to do broth or you can try tuna or the juice to encourage her to keep fluids in until you get her seen. I would also try to keep the other cats away from her so she can rest.

My cat is sleeping a lot, not eating, and shaking after spay surgery?

Hi, the incision seems absolutely fine. However what you describe in terms of demeanour and behaviour is not expected after a few days. It could be that Kit cat has a temperature or that she is still in pain. I would recommend to have her checked over to exclude any potential post op concerns such as internal wound breakdown or an internal infection. If all is well, she could have some symptomatical treatment for pain and or/temperature.

My cat is shivering and not walking after spay. Is it anesthesia?

That is definitively possible as they may take even 24-36 hours to come fully out from anesthetic (side effects), but it is as well possible that she is experiencing pain/discomfort. I would just monitor her at this stage for the next 12 hours and if signs persist have her checked at your local veterinarian as a physical examination would be essential to understand properly the underlying cause. It is common for animals to experience nausea post-surgery, especially if it is an abdominal surgery or strong pain medications are used. If you are giving any medications, I would stop for 24 hours and notify the veterinarian that you are stopping the medications to see if Stella improves. If you are giving something such as Buprenex for post operative pain control, this particular drug can cause nausea, vomiting, shaking, lethargy, etc. If she is not improved within 24 hours, then I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. While you can see a decrease in appetite and potentially drinking after a spay, her appetite should have been back to normal or close to normal by now.
