My cat is lethargic and changed behavior after stopping prednisolone?

Cats are normally very resistant to the side effects of Prednisone, so the signs you are describing are very usual to see in cats. Was Elliot started on any other medications that may be causing these symptoms? I would definitely discuss any changes in his Prednisone dosing with his veterinarian. Sometimes we can get away with lower doses, but need to decrease the amounts carefully. We normally do not recommend decreasing the amount by more than 50% at a time, so decreasing from 1 mL twice daily to 0.5 mL once daily would be decreasing the dose by four times, which might be too extreme for Elliot (even after only 6 days on the steroid). The good news is that we do not tend to see heart problems with oral steroids (only injectible steroids), so you do not need to worry about heart problems with oral steroids. Prednisone is a steroid medication and can cause a variety of side effects depending on the individual patient, so it is possible that the lethargy you are seeing could be secondary to this. It is also possible that Mitchell is experiencing mild exercise intolerance secondary to his asthma. I would recommend continuing to monitor Mitchell for the next 24 hours. If these symptoms continue or you notice any other concerning signs I would recommend having Mitchell seen by your veterinarian so that they can perform an examination and discuss the need for additional diagnostics. It depends how long he was on it. If he was on it for less than a week, you can stop it cold turkey. If it was longer than that, you can respectfully tell the vet that you are concerned about iatrogenic (meaning medical treatment caused the issue) Addison's disease (underactive adrenal gland). Prednisone specifically should not be discontinued abruptly and needs to be tapered slowly. The tapering of the prednisone has to be done carefully and calculated based on the weight of the patient. I recommend you check in with your veterinarian who prescribed the prednisone for the tapering schedule for it as they have all the information they need for this. It is not recommended that you change any medications without calling your vet first. It doesn't sound like the symptoms are related to the prednisone but anything is possible. When a cat is on steroids, they are getting corticosteroids from this medication and as a result, the adrenal glands stop producing them. When a cat suddenly stops steroids, the adrenal glands won't simply start making these hormones immediately. Without these hormones in his system or a way to make them, he can go into shock or die without emergency medical attention. Do not let him miss days of it.

Prednisone can absolutely cause behavior changes and mood alterations. The side effects are usually at their greatest during the first two to four week of therapy as the body grows accustomed to glucocorticoid drugs. The metronidazole is not likely a cause of any side effects you are currently seeing.
