Is a scar on my newly adopted cat's leg serious? What to do?

Tibbz will need to be on antibiotics as well. I would take Tibbz into your veterinarian as soon as possible to have this taken care of. I would recommend a vet visit for Tammy, given the location of this wound she will likely need some anabiotic's to prevent infection. Depending on if it appears to be a bite wound when the vet examined her they may recommend pestering her rabies vaccine as well. The black spots look like pigment in the picture. If it is not pigment I would recommend bringing Catto to the veterinarian to look at it. With the pictures, it is difficult to definitively tell. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cats are miraculous healers. The leg could just be sore. I would worry about an abscess forming from the bite. Abscesses required opening them up and antibiotics. The only thing you can do is clean the wounds twice daily with warm water and a mild soap and warm compress the wounds after each cleaning for the next 3-5 days. I wish you the best!

Based on your picture, it does look like he might have a skin infection of some kind, even possibly from a ruptured abscess. Does he go outside? I would recommend having him evaluated by his regular veterinarian to have area clipped, cleaned, and assessed to determine what may be going on, and what treatment (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, or possible surgical repair) may be needed to resolve it. If he goes outside and the wound may have come from an unknown animal, I would also recommend his rabies vaccine be boostered as well. Good luck!

The skin over the wound may be dying due to the infection. I recommend cleaning the area with a hot, damp cloth to loosen the scab and encourage the puss to drain out. Then you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. If she won’t let you clean it because it’s to painful then take her in for pain medication and sedation so they can clean and treat the wound and infection.
