My cat leaks brown, smelly fluid on my bed. Is it anal glands?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the brown liquid was very smelly (like rotten eggs mixed with poop) then she likely expressed her anal glands. Anal glands are scent glands inside the anus that are expressed with defecation. If she was scared suddenly they can accidentally release the anal gland material. The other possibility is that she is starting with diarrhea and some leaked out. Keep an eye on the litter box and see how her stools are. It sounds like the odor you are describing is discharge from Ed's anal glands. Anal glands are a scent marking gland (as you could guess) since they produce a very strong odor. It is normal to animals to express anal gland material when very stimulated or startled. However, I would recommend having your vet examine Ed's anal glands to make sure they are not overly full. My best guess, if it wasn't urine, is that Stella expressed her anal glands. This happens very commonly although the fluid is usually light yellow to grey in color. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

They express each time the dog defecates to mark its scent. They can occasionally leak at other times releasing a foul smelling brown to gray liquid. I'm guessing Good has watery diarrhea, although anal glands could also produce a small amount of bad smelling fluid that could leak from her anus. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian if you aren't sure what this fluid it. If it seems to be diarrhea parasites would be a possible cause. Anal glands can become infected or impacted and produce more fluid than normal.

It can leak out when the glands are full or if something scares the cat, they can express them. The anal glands normally are expressed during defecation.
