Why does my cat knead my head so hard it hurts? How can I stop it?

Usually when cats knead they purr and it brings them contentment and security (they like it) which is likely linked to when they were nursing kittens. They tend to knead also before laying down, so they may be preparing their bed, blankets or lab to lay down. When they knead their own it is a sign of affection and love! I hope this helps!

It is normal and common for cats to knead or "make biscuits" as a way of showing affection. The problem with kittens is that their nails are so sharp! I usually recommend trimming their nails every week to keep them short and dull, so it is not painful. Another option would be use Soft Paws ( https://www.softpaws.com/ ). Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The opening or kneading of the claws when happy or being pet is normal in cats. It DOES hurt if their claws are on your leg. Keep the nails short. You probably are not going to be able to teach him not to do something that is instinctual. If he starts to bite you then stop petting him and watch for clues from him that he has had enough petting: ears turning back, turning to look at your hand, tail flicking and stop touching him before he goes to bite. Try not to yell no at him if that triggers biting. Kittens are full of energy and they grow out of it eventually. Provide lots of toys and play time. Soon enough he will be a sleepy adult cat and you'll miss the hyper kitten! Have a good day!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Unfortunately no. I would keep her nails trimmed, cutting them every 2-3 weeks. You can cover your bed with a blanket to protect your good bed cover. And you can apply nail caps. Other options is to keep her off the bed with noise deterrents. This is a terrible habit due to her not being mothered properly after she was born. Obviously not your fault! Absolutely do not allow her to continue this behavior. I suggest you apply some bitter apple on your face (hopefully you are not sensitive to it) once she tastes that a time or two she should stop. Suckling/biting and kneading a blanket can be a stress-relief response or natural soothing response in some cats. It often looks like and mimics suckling behavior seen by kittens nursing their mothers. It is possible that Kittu is feeling a bit stressed out by something (new pets, new people, new things in the home, etc), or is just doing it because it is enjoyable. If you are worried about the blanket being ruined, you can try to divert her attention with a comforting petting or brushing session, or even have some fun with a toy as a distraction instead. If Kittu seems stressed out, pheromone diffusers/collars can also help reduce stress and tension.

There's no reason for you to put up with this behavior. Rather than punish him, when he does this, get up and move away from him, denying him your presence and attention. Ignore him for about 15 minutes, then, if he comes to you and wants attention in an acceptable form, such as rubbing and head bumping, by all means, indulge him. As soon as it progresses into unwanted behavior, walk away from him. If he persists, you can clap your hands loudly to startle him out of his mood, or you can make a shake can by putting pebbles or pennies into an empty soda can and taping the opening shut. When he does something you don't like, shake the can or drop it to make noise and it should startle him enough to discourage the behavior but not frighten him. Also, consider giving him a stuffed animal to 'make out' with. If you aren't planning on breeding him, getting him neutered will help diminish the unwanted sexual behavior.
