My cat killed a mouse. Are there health risks I should know about?

Mice are not an unusual snack for cats and rarely cause any symptoms at all other than occasionally vomiting. Monitor for any severe vomiting and report to your vet if this occurs. If mouse bait is used, there is a possibility she may be exposed to this so monitor for any other unusual signs

Killing the rat shiuldnt be an issue, my only concern would be if she had eaten the rat and it had been baited with rat poison. If she didnt ingest any i wouldnt worry, but if she did eat it you could have the vet make her vomit just in case.

Hello, sorry to hear about your cat. Some guts in mice and other rodents may appear green due to their billirubin secretion. The biggest concern for cats that kill and eat mice is indirect ingestion of rat bait. If there is rat bait set out in your house or neighborhood then I would indeed have your veterinarian assess his bloodwork to ensure his clotting factors are normal. Since Rocky did not ingest the mouse, he should be perfectly fine. However, there is a slight chance that he may have acquired tapeworms if the mouse in question is infected with them. Consider asking his vet to prescribe a praziquantel containing deworming medication or take a stool sample for a fecal flotation in a few weeks. I would not anticipate any other issues arising from this incident, so try not to worry! :-)

The mouth is not the problem, the problem is if they ingested the rat or not and if they are vaccinated or not, these are the two important factors when dealing with a dog the kills a rat, the mouth is irrelevant. if your dog ingested the rat you must take him to the vet urgently, because of the high risk of rat poison (this will likely be deadly if left untreated), the second issue is vaccination, if your dog is not vaccinated he is in risk of contracting a disease called leptospirosis which can cause severe health problems and in some cases can be fatal as well.

Probably. The whole mouse is technically edible for cats. A lot of hair or bones could cause an obstruction in a kitten, so I would monitor Holly for decreased appetite or vomiting. If this occurs, have her examined by a vet.

Thanks for your question. Fortunately, there are very few diseases that would be likely to go from a sparrow to you or Cleo. These diseases typically require a large amount of close contact and many of them are pathogens that you and your cat would come in contact with on a regular basis. Unless the bird produced droppings (urates/feces) while flying in your house, you will not need to disinfectant anything. If you wanted to clean the items that the bird came into contact with, that would not be a problem either, if it makes you feel more comfortable.
