My cat killed and ate another cat. Is this normal or a sign of illness?

Mice are not an unusual snack for cats and rarely cause any symptoms at all other than occasionally vomiting. Monitor for any severe vomiting and report to your vet if this occurs. If mouse bait is used, there is a possibility she may be exposed to this so monitor for any other unusual signs

It’s not normal instinct but reports of eating kittens are out there. Not all cats make good mothers or have good instincts. It sounds like your kitten needs to see the veterinarian quickly. Animals are very good a 'cleaning up after themselves', so if there was a dead little kitten then it isn't that surprising that the mom would eat it. In the future, removing the dead kittens before the mother can eat it is a good idea. In the mean-time, please monitor Venica for signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, painful abdomen, weakness), and if she shows any signs please bring her to a vet. Best of luck with Venica.

No, this is not a reaction to the death of the other cat, it is a medical condition, most probably a gastrointestinal infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

I'm so sorry you lost a kitten! No, they likely won't get sick from it. Cats have been known to eat their young before (even though it's not common) and have been ok. It's gross, but your cats should be fine.

It is probably not normal. I suggest you schedule an exam with your veterinarian for your cat. Your cat may have dental problems (gingivitis and/or tartar, tooth infections), diabetes or another endocrine disease. Oder kitties also often have problems with their kidneys. A thorough clinical exam and blood tests can at least rule out any serious disease that could cause eating less than usual.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh no! If the kitten looked premature she may have miscarried it. Sadly this happens in the animal world as it does with humans. It is also unfortunately natural for a cat to eat a dead abnormal kitten. It isn't wrong for Lala to be examined by a Vet. They can take an X-ray to see how many kittens are left and use the ultrasound to see if they are moving and have heart beats. If there is no vaginal discharge, fever, she is acting fine and is eating hopefully she can deliver the remaining kittens. I wish you the best!
