Why is my cat still itchy on her face after ear infection cleared?

Hello, sorry to hear about Sugarplum. It sounds like she may have a persistent ear infection. She may need to have her ears cultured to make sure she is on appropriate antibiotics. In addition to a longer course of oral antibiotics, she may need to have antibiotic ear drops prescribed as well. Thanks for the question. When we have pets with repeated ear infections we worry about underlying allergies. This may be food allergies or environmental allergies. Often until we get the underlying problem under control, the ear infections will continue to come back. So to answer your question, yes there could be more going on than just an ear infection.  First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, high quality flea treatment is given. It sounded like your veterinarian has done it already. The next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy.

 Food can be indeed one the most common cause of it. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to stop the chewing and repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics usually). 

There is also a nice topical spray available, it's called Cortavance and you can get it at the vets.

 Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider starting on a long term allergy treatment.

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea your pet regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

It could be food related, environmental allergens, or even an allergic reaction to mites or mosquitos. The discharge inside the ear needs to be cultured so you can know what is growing in the ear canal - what bacteria, yeast, etc. That way the vet will know what medication to use to get it to clear up. The ear may also need to flushed out under anesthesia. There must be an underlying cause. Cats typically don't get ear infections chronically like dogs. It is not likely to be a food allergy. More testing needs to be done.
