Why do vets express cat anal glands internally, and is it painful?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 12 lbs

Why did the new vet today express my cat's anal glands from inside the rectum? It was very painful for my girl! Our old vet always did it on the outside of the rectum.

It is very common for anal glands to be expressed this way. It's the recommended to get the most material out of the glands. It is uncomfortable at the moment, but shouldn't be afterwards. If she still seems uncomfortable tomorrow, call your veterinarian first thing in the morning.
