Why do vets express cat anal glands internally, and is it painful?

There are two ways to express anal glands, internal and external . Groomers generally express the glands externally. The internal expression is generally better and more complete. From now on, have Mario’s anal glands expressed internally every three months. If a groomer is not able to provide this type of expression, he will need to see the veterinarian for this. You can also be taught how to do this type of expression at home. yes it is very common for dogs to cry out when they get their anal glands expressed. Dogs don't like they rear end messed with and if they were full, it could have been uncomfortable for her to have them expressed. It sounds like they needed to be done though. He seems to have a big piece of poop stuck. That hurts a lot. Best take him to a vet tonight to remove it and check if there is an injury. You can gently try to put pressure to remove it yourself. put some gelatine or ointment around the inside of the anus to help it move. If you cannot move it fairly easily you will definitely need to take him to a petER tonight.

If Barri Bonds (great name!) needs his anal glands expressed due to scooting, infections or abscesses I would consider that a chronic problem. Cats should be able to express them on their own. I would consider it under wellness not hospitalization.
