My cat came home injured, skin missing, can't go to vet. What to do?

The wound doesn't look infected or Bloody more like a scrape that has removed hair. I would simply keep him warm and comfortable until you get to the vets. Try and feed little and often as they can over indulge when they gave been away a while.

It would be best to have Sylvester examined now, on an emergency basis. Cat bites can become infected quickly and he may need prophylactic antibiotics. If you decide to wait you could try cleaning his shoulder with mild soap and watching for increased pain, swelling or bleeding.

Poor cat! There are no photos attached so I can't see what this wounds look like but I can say that if there is pus, it's infected. This cannot be treated at home, he has to see a vet as soon as possible. If you can't afford a vet, I can give you some financial resources that may help help you. Wounds can be challenging to manage, especially if a cat will not tolerate you trying to clean it. It is possible that the wound will heal over time on its own with scar tissue. However, there is also a chance that the skin is too damaged or will become so infected with bacteria that it will not heal. I recommend monitoring the area frequently and bringing the cat back to the veterinarian if the skin appears to be becoming black or nonviable, or you notice excessive abnormal discharge that is yellow/thick. Ouch, poor Eddie! Unfortunately, it's impossible to fully assess this wound's severity from a picture alone. The wound itself looks fairly large and appears to be covered in a hair-crusted scab. The challenge likes in how deep the wound goes under the scab, and if it penetrates into the tooth roots, jaw, or salivary glands. To answer your question, yes, Eddie does need veterinary attention. Since he's afraid of people, it's likely that he will need to be sedated in order for your veterinarian to examine this wound. Your vet will need to determine the depth of the wound, and at a minimum, will need to clip the hair around the wound and clean it with an antiseptic cleanser. I fully expect that they'll prescribe an antibiotic or give a long-acting antibiotic injection, as it's likely that this wound is also infected. Try to get to the vet as soon as you can - preferably within the next day. Until your vet appointment, be sure to put an e-collar (cone) on Eddie to prevent him from scratching at this area, as that will make matters worse. Best of luck and I hope that he heals quickly!

Oh no, poor Naqusha! Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at PetCoach to prescribe any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your cat. I would call around to find the closest vet in your country to take him into as he really does need veterinary treatment for it. You can gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and I would put a bandage over it to keep it clean and dry. Do not allow Naqsha to go outside if he's allowed outside, and I would put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at it. I can give you a link on how to make one at home. I am very concerned that this could get infected, and he likely needs antibiotics to treat it but you need to see a vet to get them. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stormy! I would shave the fur away from the wound then clean it well with water and a mild soap (avoid hydrogen peroxide). Then apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. The most important thing is to have Stormy wear and E-collar to prevent licking and keep him indoors. He should see a Vet as soon as possible to at a minimum get antibiotics but to also see if surgery is required to close the wound.
