Can I give my cat my human Nitrofurantoin for a suspected UTI?

Hi, I believe my cat has a UTI, am I okay to give Nitrofurantoin? I have these myself and can easily break open a capsule to put in his food? He is crying and is discomfort when going for a wee.

Do not medicate your pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Inappropriate antibiotic use can lead to resistant bacteria and may complicate the underlying condition. If Rupert does have a UTI, the nitrofurantoin will have no effect if the bacteria is not susceptible. A urinalysis and culture will confirm infection and identify the responsible organism as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment.

Poor Rupert. Unfortunately this is not a safe medication to give your pet. Even if it were, we would not be allowed to advocate using medication prescribed for yourself on your pet here on Petcoach as appropriate telemedicine advice. I would recommend taking Rupert in to your vet right away because it sounds like this may be a bit more than a simple urinary tract infection. With increased vocalization and crying, I would suspect her may have a urinary blockage which can be life threatening if not treated right away (within 24 hrs in most cases). He needs to be seen immediately and treated for this appropriately. I hope your fur baby Rupert has a full and speedy recovery from his urinary issues.

Can I give my cat Doxycycline for a UTI? Is it safe and what dose?

If you are worried about a UTI in Jewel it is best to take her to a vet so they can look at the urine under the microscope and determine which antibiotic would be best and safest for her. Is it safe to give my cat human Augmentin for her URI?

No, I would not give Myla human augmentin to treat an upper respiratory infection. For one, it's never recommended to self treat your cat's health problems as you may accidentally do more harm than good. In addition, URI in cats are typically caused by viruses, so antibiotics will not help at all. I would have Myla seen by a vet. The vet can prescribe medications to treat her symptoms.

No, your vet must check your cat before he can prescribe any treatment for suspected UTI. UTI is not common in cats, most cats with symptoms of UTI actually suffer from a bladder inflammation that is stress related and the treatment for this condition is completely different than the treatment for UTI.

Please take her to a Pet ER for an exam, urinalysis and prescription pain medicine if needed. It is rare for cats to have an actual infection (UTI), however cats often get a stress induced inflammatory reaction of the bladder which is quite painful and has the same signs as a UTI. Please do not give her any medication designated for humans. Cats often cannot metabolize human medications properly. Best take her to a Pet ER now. If you call your vet's office, there will be information on the nearest emergency veterinary service on the answering machine.
