My adopted male cat howls all night. What's causing it and how to help?

Unfortunately it's impossible to know why Adik is meowing so much! If the cats are not spayed and neutered, he is more likely to reactive if the female is coming into heat or if there are other un-neutered males outside. If they are not spayed and neutered, I recommend to have this done. This may help to decrease reactivity but it may now fully control it. Other things you can do are related to environmental enrichment. Try feeding him out of a food puzzle. Hide food for him to find. Provide a stand or resting place by a window so he can look outside. You may also try clicker training him for positive behavior. Be sure he is urinating, male cats are at risk for urinary obstructions. Sometimes they vocalized. If he is a senior cat, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can cause increased vocalization. If there are intact female cats outside as well he is likely sensing them. I would consider neutering him to reduce the kitten population. If he is eating, drinking and otherwise fine then that is most likely the cause. Have a good day!

I would say it is time to neuter Hobi! He is likely yeowling at night by the window because he wants to go prowling for females with whom he can mate. Even if he does find one to mate with, he's still going to want to go out every night to find females, so the way to stop this behavior is to have him neutered. An adult feral cat may have a difficult transition to being an indoor cat. If she is intact, the vocalizations and nighttime behaviors could indeed be heat related. Having her spayed may decrease those behaviors but may not completely eliminate them. Try a pheromone collar, spray or plug in diffuser to decrease any anxiety she may be experiencing. If that doesn't help, an exam with your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying cause would be recommended. If you think she would be happier back at the barn, have her spayed (if she isn't already) to prevent accidental or unwanted litters. Some cats prefer living outdoors and that's may be the case here.

If Toby is not neutered it could very likely be related to reaching sexual maturity and a desire to b let our to find a mate. The only behaviors that will be affected by neutering are those that are under the influence of male and female hormones. So for example, a cat's temperament, training, and personality, are related to genetics and upbringing, not hormones. Neutering does not “calm” an excitable cat, and unless a neutered animal is overfed or underexercised, there is no reason for it gain weight or become inactive. The undesired traits which are related to theae hormones such as sexual behaviours, aggression, and urine marking will change over the course of a few days to a few months. If Toby is neutered it Cooke be s the first signs of an illness. As cats will often become more vocal when in pain. I see that Callie isn't neutered. He may be sexually mature, and he wants to go outside to prowl for females. Cats like to do this at night, and that could be why he is excessively meowing. I would have him neutered to see if this stops the behavior. Best of luck.
