My cat got honey in her eye, squinting. Can I use wipes or warm cloth?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 8.8 lbs

My cat was licking some honey off my finger and she knocked my finger into her eye with some honey on it . Do I use pet wipes or can I use a warm cloth to help get it out? She has tried cleaning it but she keeps squinting

Poor Boots! You can use a warm washcloth or cotton ball, or try rinsing her eye with plain saline eye wash. If she's still squinting and acting uncomfortable by tomorrow, then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as she may have damaged her cornea.

This is a form of uveitis. It could be due to infection, or a tumor in the eye. This is a painful condition that can get much worse if not treated appropriately, so I recommend taking her to a vet in the next 24 hours for treatment. You may consider taking her to the shelter, which are normally staffed by veterinarians.

I'm sorry to hear that Lilly is having a problem with her eye. You can use any human irrigating saline solution safely for a cat's eye. However, if she has discharge and is squinting, you should have her evaluated by her veterinarian. Your veterinarian will examine her eye for any scratches, infection, or abnormal material. Anytime a cat is squinting, we worry that the eye is painful, so I would recommend having it evaluated as soon as possible before it gets any worse. I hope that helps. Squinting the eye could be result of trauma (usually scratch from another cat) or infection. Please, keep wiping the eye and giving her soothing eye drops. If the eye is not back to normal after 5-6 days, you will have to try and get her seen by a vet.

If the discharge is continuous, or he is squinting or eyes are matted closed he should see a veterinarian to determine the cause of the ocular discharge. Do not use any sort of eye drops without a veterinary prescription. Treatment will vary depending on the cause of the infection or inflammation.

It could be that some of the hot water splashed into Chimpu's eyes irritating them Try flushing his eyes with cool water to see if that helps. If he keeps rubbing at them, the eyes turns red, and/or you see a discharge coming from his eyes, then I would have him checked out by a vet. I hope this helps!

What to do if my cat's eye is injured, squinting, and vet is closed?

If there is an emergency vet within a reasonable distance, I would recommend that Willie get checked out sooner than later. Eye problems can be very painful, and can go from bad to worse very quickly (even overnight). There can be many causes of squinting an eye, including something stuck under the eyelid, corneal abrasion or ulcer, autoimmune disease, among a few others. Without personally seeing it I can't be certain, but what you may be seeing with him "looking to the upper right" is the effect of a raised third eyelid covering the inner part of the eye to make it look weird. You can try to flush the eye with a saline eye rinse, but do not apply any medications topically. Keep him inside in a dim room since bright light makes many eye problems more painful.

I wouldn't worry too much. If she is tolerating you wiping it, just clean it as needed with with a warm wet cotton ball. If she is pawing at her eyes or rubbing her face on the ground, or seems to have any other issue going on, call your vet and get her in for an exam.
