My cat was hit by car, bleeding, struggling to breathe. What to do?

You should take your kitty to a vet as soon as possible after the accident for an exam as she could have internal bleeding, a ruptured bladder and also broken bones. The fact that she is hiding and only walking slowly is a sign that she is in pain and got injured in the accident. What we perceive as a gentle bump is quite a hard hit for a cat. When an animal is hit by a car sometimes there are injuries you can't see from the outside. They can bleed internally, herniate organs from the belly in to the chest, get contusions (bruising) of the lung or air can get trapped outside of the lungs (pneumothorax), rupture their bladders, brain trauma. Cats can also breath heavily when they are in shock. Sadly there is nothing that you can do alone. He needs a Vet to listen to his lungs and evaluate him for internal bleeding and shock. Just keep him warms and comfortable if you can't get him anywhere I wish you both the best!

I am so sorry to hear this! To answer your question- it depends on the severity of the injuries and the overall health of the cat. But the quality of life of the cat in question is the real concern. This sounds like a significant injury that no doubt is causing pain and distress. You did not state whether or not this is your cat, or a cat that is able to be caught, but I would highly recommend taking the cat to a veterinarian as soon as possible to relieve any suffering and hopefully treat the cat's injuries. It sounds like he was hit hard enough in the head and face to have concussion symptoms. He may have fractured bones in his face or nasal sinuses. The blood indicates trauma to his nose which you are seeing by the swelling. This could be inflammation or something is broken. Sneezing is a normal response to inflammation/pain/irritation in the nasal cavity or sinuses. If the bleeding continues, he acts abnormal or extra sleepy, wont' eat or play then he needs a Vet exam. Otherwise you can watch the swelling and sneezing. If there is no improvement by Monday in the swelling he should be seen. I wish Sebastian the best!

Oh poor Stogie! If the bleeding has stopped and there is no swelling, I'd keep an eye on her for now. If you see swelling, the bleeding starts again, she stops eating, or becomes lethargic, then I would be worried and have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

This case is a touch tricky, because my first advice is absolutely that if Ziggy seems the slightest bit off, he should go immediately and directly to the nearest veterinary clinic for emergency care. The fall from your kitchen unit could have injured either his back or his head - and such injuries require immediate attention from a veterinarian. However, extreme stress can also be dangerous for rabbits, and with the stress of the bath, the fall, and now being wet and cold, the best thing for Ziggy may be to have some quiet time in a safe, dark, quiet place to relax while he dries off and calms down. So, I recommend you watch him really closely. If he seems to be moving around ok and is acting mentally appropriate/normal, then keep him somewhere comfortable, quiet, and dark to relax and dry off. However, if he is sluggish, not moving normally, breathing abnormally, or in any other way is acting abnormal, then you should rush him directly to the vet. When in doubt, absolutely call your nearest emergency clinic and talk to someone on the phone, who can walk you through assessing Ziggy and can help you make the best decision about rushing him in versus letting him relax. This could be as severe as a fracture or something more mild like a soft tissue injury. The fact that he is crying when the leg is manipulated indicates that he is quite painful requiring pain control medications at least. If he does have a fracture, he may actually require surgery. For this reason it is crucial that he is indeed evaluated by a veterinarian. You could consider taking him to your local humane society as often times they offer less expensive veterinary care.
