Why is my cat in heat peeing and pooping outside her litter box?

Unfortunately this could be related to her heat cycle (hormones), a bladder infection or a behavioral issue. If you've tried everything at home already, it is time to bring Jennifer to the vet. Issues such as urinary tract infections can sometimes cause a cat to start having accidents. If she isn't spayed or is in heat, hormonal changes can also cause spraying and other issues that may look like accidents in an attempt to attract a male. Cleaning all areas with an enzymatic cleaner, ruling out health issues with a vet visit, spaying if it is hormonal/heat related, and making sure your cat can easily get to her litter box can help.

It sounds like you have a few issues going on. First, I would ask if they are spayed and neutered? Cats start to come into heat anywhere from 6 months old and up. Their heat cycle repeats every three weeks. This could be why your female cat is acting strange. Male cats will start to develop testosterone which will cause them to do silly things... like pee in places to mark their territory. And yes, sibling cats will mate. They don't know or care that they are siblings. So it is best to have them both fixed. The second most common reason cats will urinate or defecate outside the box is an illness. Many have urinary tract infections or crystals in their bladders that cause a lot of discomfort. I would definitely have a vet check them out to rule out health issues. Finally, you should always have one more littler box than you have cats. So for you, I would say have three boxes, spread throughout the house. Causes of urination outside the box can be urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, trauma to the area, or difficulty getting into the litterbox due to pain, or other reasons. It is important that you make an appointment to have Jinx seen by your veterinarian as soon as you can to help determine the cause of his behaviour and to start treatment. If you notice his straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and she should be seen by a vet immediately. In an unneutered male cat like Jinx, it may be that he is starting to mark around the house, in which case having him neutered may help. This will also help prevent him from getting your other cat pregnant. It is also possible that Jinx is exhibiting signs of stress in his home environment. You can do the following to help make sure Jinx’s environmental needs are being met: Cats need at least one litterbox per cat plus one extra to help reduce stress associated with the litterbox. If you are seeing liquid from the anus, I would be concerned she could have diarrhea or her anal sacs could be full, in which case I would recommend a veterinary exam. This sounds behavioral to me based on your description. I typically recommend having multiple litter boxes around and wherever she is urinating, place a litter box right there and see if that helps.
