Do cat food brands in Europe use the AAFCO quality assurance label?

It is best to use an AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) food. AAFCO does not regulate, test, approve or certify pet foods in any way. AAFCO establishes the nutritional standards for complete and balanced pet foods, and it is the pet food company's responsibility to formulate their products according to the appropriate AAFCO standard. When you don't use a food that uses AAFCO standards then you don't know if the food is appropriately balanced. Pick a food that uses AAFCO standards. It will tell you on the bag. Hi there. Good question! Just because a food is expensive doesn't mean it's good. I agree that the food should say that it is formulated established by AAFCO. To have the "complete and balanced" statement in the nutritional adequacy statement a dog or cat food must either: 1. Meet one of the Dog or Cat Food Nutrient Profiles established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) OR 2. Pass a feeding trial using AAFCO procedures. For a product to meet one of the AAFCO nutrient profiles, it must contain EVERY nutrient listed in the profile at the recommended level. If the food is not AAFCO then you cannot be sure it is actually balanced regardless of what they claim. My recommendation is to stick with an AAFCO food. I hope this helps. Pet food labels are notoriously difficult to read and interpret. Start by determining the life stage for which the diet is formulated. Adult diets should be fed to adult pets, whereas puppy, kitten or all life stage diet should be fed to growing animals. If a pet food has been formulated and/or tested to meet certain standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), pet food companies are able to place an AAFCO statement on the label. When in doubt, discuss any diet concerns for your pet with your veterinarian.

Any food from a name brand source, science diet, Purina, Iams, royal canin, are typically well balanced for cats. There is specific label that says AAFCO.. you do want to make sure this on there as it means it was tested and approved to standards. Each company makes certain formulas and flavors that you can pick from to select the best ingredients you want such as natural balance by science diet

Due to these high standards, most pet foods for sale are adequate to provide complete nutrition for pet dogs. What you want is a food that has an AAFCO statement on the package that the food has been used in FEEDING TRIALS. You will find some food that have a statement that they are FORMULATED to meet requirements. Your family veterinarian may have specific preferences for food types. In general, food made by Hills, Purina, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin will have excellent nutrient profiles for your pet. If your dog has specific medical requirements, your family veterinarian can make recommendations for a prescription food.

Don't believe those sites. Typically they are written by people who have absolutely no training in animal nutrition. The best brands of cat food are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. They meet AAFCO standards, run feeding trials, and (most important), have veterinary nutritionists on staff that ensure the food is healthy and balanced. They are the only brands to have this. I feed my cats Iams, and they love it (including my Persian).
