My pet has fluid in lungs. What are the emergency symptoms?

Buddy needs to start medications right away to drain to drain the fluid. There is often an underlying condition such as heart disease that will require management as well. Have Buddy examined by the veterinarian to start medications and get the best care. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Unfortunately, if he is in congestive heart failure, the only treatment is the lasix pill (furosemide). Depending on how severe his condition is, he may not survive without hospitalization with oxygen and injectible lasix. Your vet may have a strong suspicion of this if Bizou has a heart murmur and many crackles in the lungs (we can hear with the stethoscope). However, even that is not enough to definitively diagnose it. I have seen a couple dogs I was sure were in heart failure and when I took the x-rays, it turned out to be pneumonia or cancer. If you can at all afford it, go for the xrays so you at least know what you are dealing with - if it's cancer instead of heart failure, that may change your approach. If it is heart failure, it will give a clue as to how serious. If you can't afford the x-rays, treat for whatever the vet thinks is most likely. If heart failure is it, the most commonly prescribed medications are furosemide, enalapril, and pimobendan (though there are others). Finally, if he is still struggling for air, his tongue/gums are any color other than bright pink, or the vet thinks it is serious enough to require oxygen, and you cannot pay for treatment, I would strongly consider euthanasia. Dying by gasping and struggling for air while drowning in your own fluids is a horrible way to go - I've seen it several times. Hi there. Usually inhalation would not cause fluid in the lungs, but I would recommend having Baby seen by your vet if you suspect any lung issues. These can be progressive and get worse rapidly, so if you're able to have Baby checked today that would be a good idea. The cause of pulmonary edema which is fluid in the lungs, can be do too many things. I would want to rule out heart disease, pneumonia, other infection, cancer, or systemic disease. If your vet has performed Diagnostics already and has administered treatments but Baxter is still not improving, then I would suggest seeking a secondary opinion from a specialist. Based on the previous Diagnostics that were performed and treatments that were administered, the internal medicine specialist may be able to help more in determining what other possibilities could be causing the fluid accumulation. I understand that, but Mimu is having trouble breathing so it's a medical emergency. This will be very distressing to him, and it may be he is having heart problems such as heart failure. Heart failure will cause fluid to build up back in his lungs, causing labored breathing. If he does have this and it's left untreated, he will literally drown in fluid in his lungs. You do not want to do that to him, so you need to bring him into a vet immediately. If he does have heart failure, there are medications that can be prescribed to make him more comfortable and diminish his symptoms. Please take him into a vet now. Best of luck.

Hello, thank you for your question about Lily. Based on the symptoms you are describing it sounds like Lily may have an upper respiratory infection or other respiratory disease. If Lily is otherwise acting ok (not lethargic) and is still eating and drinking well I do not think there is a problem in waiting to see the vet until tomorrow. If Lily is very lethargic, has no appetite, or she begins to breath very rapidly or have difficulty I would strongly recommend trying to have her seen by a veterinarian sooner. Based on Lily's symptoms your veterinarian may recommend performing chest x-rays, bloodwork, or a respiratory swab for testing. Hope this helps, good luck!

He needs to be examined by a veterinarian right away. Your vet can take an x-ray of his chest to evaluate his lungs and airway. He could have pneumonia, asthma, heart disease, or fluids in his chest. Please call your vet immediately and schedule an appointment.
