My cat's flea medicine didn't work. Can I give a second dose?

Yes it is safe to reapply most topical flea preventatives every 2 weeks if needed. This should be fine and safe to do since you are 2 weeks out. However, if you are still seeing fleas after this correct dosing, it is best to consider switching to a more effective product such as Revolution. I would wait and see if enough flea medication got on your kitty, ie until the day you see a flea on her. Once you see a flea on her you can put another dose on her. You do not say how old your kitten is. If it is a very young kitten I would probably use Frontline for the second dose.

It is likely to be safe but poorly effective as it would not have enough active ingredients for the size of cat. This would mean you would be undertreating and encouraging drug resistance in fleas (but not reducing the risk of any side effects should they occur). I strongly recommend using the correct size and strength for each cat

Capstar comes in two sizes. Cats should get the 11.4mg. A half dose will work to an extent but will not fully work since the dose is smaller than it should be. Yes, you could give the other half tomorrow but it would be better to give the full amount. The larger size is 57mg and half of that would be an over dose for a cat. I do not recommend to give this to a cat. Also, capstar only lasts 24 hours. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Since it's been two weeks since you late applied the Advantage, you can try another dose of it. He can also have Capstar again. Be sure to disinfect your home, as that will be a continuing source of fleas. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

If you used a topical preventative and applied it soon after bathing, it won't have been as effective as it should be. These produce use the oils in the skin to spread. When you bathe a pet, these oils are stripped and you have to wait for them to build up again. Typically, it recommended to apply a topical 3 days before or 3 days after a bath or getting wet. It should then be used monthly for at least 3 consecutive months, preferably year round. You should also treat the environment, since most fleas live off of the pet and only hop on for feeding. Vacuum everywhere the cats have been. Discard of the bag or empty the canister outdoors immediately after. Wash all bedding in the hottest water allowable by fabric and dry in the dryer. Use a cat safe area treatment to prevent reinfestation. An oral preventative, such as CapStar, can be given to quickly kill any adult fleas on the cats. Get it from your vet or from the local Petco.

This will depend on the type of tape worm medication. You should use only a proper tape worm medication containing praziquantel or one prescribed by your veterinarian. If your cat regurgitates the praziquantel wormer you can give her another dose the next day. If she only took part of it, give her the rest of the dose preferably 1/2 hour later.
