My cat has a raw neck from a flea collar. How to heal and prevent?

Flea collars can cause reactions in cats, as they are exquisitely sensitive to flea medication. Given that Blue has wounds, I think an oral flea treatment would be best for her. I recommend Bravecto. You can get it from the vet. Keep in mind that fleas live in the environment, not on the animal, so you will have to treat the home as well. Wash their bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

the only flea collar worth anything is Seresto. It is labeled for 8 months of prevention, but I would expect around 6 months. They have Bravecto now that is a topical and it will last for 3 months now. If those do not help you may want to look into a hypoallergenic diet also

I would advise having your veterinarian evaluate her especially if the integrity of the skin is compromised. This can lead to infection and more itching and scratching which will cause more damage. Your vet can evaluate the area and advise an adequate treatment to get her through this. I would contact the manufacturer of the collar and report this adverse reaction. Hopefully, along with your veterinarian helping you, they will offer to cover any medical costs associated with you using their product. Good luck

I hate to hear that Gabe is having a problem. I would worry about an infection possibly related to the collar but could be due to something else. Clean it off as best you can and take him into the veterinarian tomorrow. It could be an abscess which may require lancing and draining. The doctor will likely prescribe antibiotics and pain medications. Try to keep Gabe from scratching it. Try cutting a tube sock to place around the wound. Just make sure nothing is too tight. With the exception of Seresto collars ( https://www.petbasics.com/cat-products/seresto-for-cats/?pref=cat ), flea collars do not work well for cats and can cause skin irritation, so I do not recommend them for cats. I would consider removing the flea collar and see if the skin lesions go away. If you have also applied a topical flea medication that should work better than the flea collar. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that any of these "natural" alternatives work well for fleas, and I have never seen any of my clients have much success with them. If you want to use a flea collar, I would recommend the Seresto collar - it's safe and non-toxic, and is usually quite effective for both fleas and ticks.

Yes it would be ideal to remove the collar and use another type of flea treatment, waiting at least a couple of weeks (you can use comfortis tablets). It is very likely that both the scab and the hair loss is due to the collar which is causing skin reaction/allergy.
