My cat has a scratch from a cat fight. What should I do for it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 10.5 lbs

My indoor cat got outside and fought with another cat. I'm not sure if the other cat was a stray or not. I noticed once my cat came back inside that he had a small scratch on the side of his face. My cat is up to date on his rabies shot. Is there anything I need to do about the scratch?

Having the scratch on the face means he won! I would monitor the scratch, maybe clean it and put some antibiotic ointment on it for a few days. Should Dominick's face start to swell under the scratch, or should the skin get really red and painful , or both, then take him to a veterinarian for an exam. He will then likely have a cat bite abscess that may need to be lanced. Apart from that, he should be fine.

It looks like he has a hotspot/skin infection so he should be examined and treated by a vet. Your vet can clean the wound and prescribe an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory to treat. He may need to wear an E-collar to prevent scratching to allow healing.
