My cat is having surgery. Does she need to fast before anesthesia?

My advice is to get this tooth extracted asap. It will be causing Beansy a lot of pain, and will make her quite sick. Not eating is a medical emergency, as if cats go 72 hours or longer without eating, they will develop a fatty liver. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment, so you want to avoid that. I think she needs to see a vet now.

We sometimes do anesthesia multiple times on animals in just a few days or weeks. That is not abnormal. I can never tell you that she will be fine to have anesthesia again after 5 days. No one can tell you that. As long as they are hydrating her (putting her on IV fluids during the procedure) though, I would not be overly worried. Anesthetics we use are the same as in human medicine (in most cases) and are very safe. If she is eating better and you want to wait a couple weeks that may be an option. You should voice your concerns to your vet and go from there. They may agree with you that since she is eating better maybe she can wait a couple weeks. They may have a reason they want the procedure done so quickly. I don't have enough information to know what they are thinking. Hope this helps. I agree having her teeth cleaned it’s a good idea especially if she has tartar buildup.I would start by having your veterinarian run some general bloodwork to make sure her organ function is good and if everything looks good and her heart is healthy and anesthesia is very safe. Having bad dental health can be more detrimental in the long run and getting this taken care of would be a great idea. Also make sure that wherever you have her teeth cleaned has full monitoring devices and that they do intravenous fluids during the procedure. This is a standard safety measure and you want to go somewhere that has that available. Hope that is helpful and have a wonderful day.

There isn't a test to see if a cat is allergic to anesthesia, but blood work can be done to check his organ functioning to assess his anesthetic function. You typed that your cat is going to be neutered on Sunday morning, but I wonder if you mean Monday morning. He should not have food after midnight the night before surgery, but you can offer him half his normal meal at 6pm the night before surgery.

During the procedure a tube will be inserted into his windpipe, sealing it completely which will eliminate any risks of bile/food aspiration. 99.9% of cats do not experience vomiting during anesthesia anyway.

Contact your veterinarian or the local clinic tomorrow to make an appointment for a dental prophylaxis (cleaning). Your vet will likely recommend pre-anesthetic lab work after a physical exam to confirm Nori is able to undergo anesthesia.

Tashi's loss of appetite can be related to her cancer, similarly to humans who have cancer, animals can lose their appetite and not feel well. However, it can be caused by something else such as a toxin, intestinal parasites, or a number of underlying medical conditions. I recommend keeping a close eye on Tashi, and having her seen by a vet prior to her appointment if she does not eat for a full 24 hours, has loss of energy, or vomits/has diarrhea.
