Why are my cat's eyes uneven after dental anesthesia?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sparky. Horner's syndrome is not a common side effect from anesthesia and it does not frequently happen in young animals. She would need to see her veterinarian to know for sure though. She could have an eye infection or even an ulcer (scratch across the surface of the eye). Anesthesia does dry out the eyes making them more prone to ulcers. It would be a good idea for her to see her veterinarian again if possible as she may need medication. Horner's syndrome can result due to an ear cleaning if there was damage done to the ear during the cleaning, but it can also result from an ear infection, blunt force trauma, and disease of the eye among other things. If Munna had Horner's syndrome, you would see other symptoms such as drooping of the eyelid of the affected side, the third eyelid would be raised and appear red, and the affected eye may appear sunken. Moon should see a vet for this immediately. It's very serious when one eye suddenly is dilated while the other is not. The vet can diagnose what is causing this to occur, and can treat him for it. Please take him into a vet now.

Whether anesthesia is given in the muscle, in the vein, or via inhalant (gas), it can cause cardiovascular changes that may manifest in illness days after; for instance if they had some pre-existing kidney insufficiency, its possible that deceased blood pressure while under anesthesia may further damage the kidneys to cause kidney failure. While I suppose it is possible that there could be decreased blood flow to the brain that could cause a change in their personality, this certainly isn't something we recognize occurring, I think in terms of frequency of that happening I would say its very rare. Sedation/anesthesia can cause seizures but only in animals that would have been prone to seizures anyway. There would have been no way for your vet to know that before giving it to her. Seizures for three days now post-op is not normal or a good sign. You need to consult more with your vet and if they don't seem to be helping get a second opinion elsewhere. Unfortunately, seizures in cats, especially starting at her age, does not carry a good prognosis. That could be a side effect of the anesthetics, Ketamine which is widely used for cat spays can cause this symptom, it usually resolve within 24-48 hours. If you think she is still showing signs of partial blindness by tomorrow, call your vet.

Hello, sorry to hear about Minou. General anesthesia and it’s associated side effects can last up to 72 hours in pets especially older pets. I am not surprised that he seems still a little more quiet after his procedure and would allow him up to 72 hrs to recover from anesthesia. You can offer probiotics but they may not be necessary at this time. If he continues to be under the weather or if he is becoming more lethargic, does not want to eat or has other clinical signs such as vomiting and diarrhea then have you veterinarian examine him again. If Landry is acting otherwise normally I would not be overly concerned. It may take a week or so to resolve if related to the surgical anesthesia. If no improvement after a week to 10 days I would suggest you have your vet recheck him. You didn't mention what type of surgery he had.
