My cat's eye is watering, squinting, and has yellow discharge. What can I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 4 years old | 10 lbs

Cat has one eye watering and some yellowish discharge. She is squinting and keeping her eye mostly closed, she is clearly uncomfortable and she can’t see vet for two days. Anything I can do to help ease her discomfort?

Poor Ghost! You can use a soft wash cloth soaked in water or sterile saline, and wipe away any discharge, but unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give her. She really does need to see a vet as soon as possible, as any eye problem is considered an emergency. This is because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Have her seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Maximus. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as his eye looks painful. He could have an infection or even a scratch across the surface of the eye. His veterinarian will likely perform some tests on his eye and then prescribe an eye ointment or drop. Poor Markus! It sounds like he has an eye infection, and yes any eye problem is considered serious. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Markus into a vet immediately to have his eye examined and diagnosed so it can be treated. I hope this helps!

It sounds like Tigrou might have a viral upper respiratory infection or may have a scratch or other corneal irritation. If Tigrou is squinting, if his eye seems red or the discharge turns green or yellow, or if his appetite becomes decreased I’d recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian. Otherwise I think it’s probably okay to wait until the clinic reopens to have Tigrou examined.

You can try some artificial tear drops OTC but I am afraid that he is going to need some prescription drops and possibly even oral antibiotics. Watch him closely. If he starts to get lethargic, the discharge doesn't improve, he stops eating or starts to sneeze/cough, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look. Many times discharge from the eye in a cat can signal the start of an upper respiratory infection. Other possible causes are a blocked tear duct, allergy, or scratch on the cornea. Because anytime the eye is involved I'm very cautious I'd recommend seeing veterinarian especially if the issue does not resolve by tomorrow. A veterinarian can examine the eye to ensure there is no infection or signs of an upper respiratory infection starting. They can also check to make sure no corneal scratches are present as these can be painful and require antibiotic ointment to treat. Anytime the eye is having an issue it's always best to err on the side of caution and have it checked out. I'm sorry Cherry has eye discharge. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do for her at home. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any eye problem is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Given she won't let you look at it, it's like very painful to Cherry. I would have Cherry seen by a vet immediately for this, as it needs to be examined and treated right away.

My cat has yellow eye discharge and won't eat. What can I do?

I'm sorry to hear that Dr Bigotes seems to have an infection. The yellow discharge from the eyes is very common with conjunctivitis and/or ulcers and does require an eye antibiotic ointment to clear it up. Frequently cats will have a viral infection that can cause this problem as well. I would recommend using a warm compress for 5 minutes a few times a day on her eyes to help remove some of the discharge. You also can gently flush the eyes with sterile saline to remove some of the discharge to see if that makes her more comfortable. I am also very concerned that she is not eating. She may have something else going on that is causing her to loose her appetite, like an upper respiratory infection. You can try heating the food to make it smell more pungent to see if that helps her to smell it better and hopefully eat. Ultimately, I do think you need to take Dr Bigotes into your vet when you are able because she likely needs to have antibiotic ointment for her eyes and to look for an ulceration that may need further treatment. She also may need further treatment for the inappetence.

It could be Oreo has hurt his eye or has an eye infection. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into a vet today to have this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

Why is my cat's eye watering for days with no other symptoms?

Her duct that draining the eye could be clogged. I would put a warm compress on inner part of the eye near the nose and gently massage. You could also try Benadryl twice a day to see if there is an allergy component. If this doesn’t help, I would talk to your vet about y’all trying an antibiotics eye drop with or without a steroid to see if that helps it.
