Why is my cat's eye watering for days with no other symptoms?

Hello. It is very common for an upper respiratory tract infection to also cause eye symptoms. This may include a clear watery discharge and inflammation of the eyelids and conjunctiva. If the discharge becomes thick and yellow/ green or your cat squints or is holding the eye closed, she should be rechecked and started in eye medication as well. It could be minor infection (bacterial or viral), foreign body, stray eye lash or even an obstructed tear duct. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine definitively what the underlying cause may be. If the discharge persists, consider an exam with your veterinarian. If Ruth is rubbing ornpawing at the eye, place an e-collar (cone) on her until she sees the doctor.

It’s always best to have the eye checked but if he’s not squinting, no redness or discomfort, no green or yellow discharge then you should be ok to monitor the eye at home. Some eyes water when the tear ducts are plugged or from mild allergies. Do take him in if this continues or worsens. I would say that based on the picture and your description, as long as the eye does not look reddened or inflamed and the discharge is not green or yellow then I would say waiting 2 or 3 days should be fine. If at the end of the two to three day time frame the discharge is still there and is not any better or is worse, then I would schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to have this looked at. Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Mitzy is unwell. The most likely cause for her symptoms is an eye infection. If the eye hasn't improved and it has been several days since it started, you will need to take Mitzy to the vet, as she will require antibiotic eye drops. The vet will also want to perform a special test to check for a scratch on the eye, which would help determine the best type of eye drops to use. In the meantime, continue to use warm compresses on the eye to help provide relief and clear away mucus. I would also keep an e-collar (cone) on her at all times to prevent her from scratching and further damaging the eye. If further injury does occur, the eye could get much worse very quickly. The most common reason for a watery eye is infection though allergies are possible. Without an exam, it's hard to know. Since it's been going on a week, I recommend to have Pet examined by the veterinarian. Sometimes Lysine for cats can help as well as an oral supplement. I hope this helps.

Clarise’s eye discharge may be due to a viral infection, a problem with the drainage of the lacrimal duct or allergies. Infections are the most common cause and I would recommend to have her seen by her veterinarian as medication may be indicated. The doctor may use a special dye to stain the corneas and look for any ulcers as some viruses will cause this. If the doctor is not suspicious of an infection, she will recommend other tests or treatments. I recommend to get an appoint quickly as things can get worse. In the mean time, you can give her 250mg of Lysine twice daily. This supplement will help viral infections. You can often find this in pet stores.
