My cat has an eye infection. How long until doxycycline helps?

The eye is quite badly damaged and I would not expect it to return to normal. Chlamydia psittaci is an infection that can cause eye disease, but I would expect that the other eye or nose would be affected as well if this was the primary problem. My suspicion is that the eye was damaged by something. This often happens when they bump it into something or are fighting. The doxycycline is OK at that dose and rate. I would give this for only five days. You can help keep the eye from getting infected and help it heal by getting a good medicated eye drop from the pharmacy. A broad spectrum antibiotic/antifungal/antiinflammatory would be best. It's best to apply it to the eye six times a day, or as much as you can. Give this until the outside of the eye does not look red and swollen. Also, gently wipe away the crusts around the eye with warm water once a day. The eye will continue to have changes and will probably look worse and more sunken as time goes on, but they can adapt to this condition. If you are able to bring the bird to a veterinarian, they can offer other treatment options. I hope that helps and the bird gets better soon.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. In regards to the test results, I would contact your vet to find out what the results were. For the cats you havestarted on doxycycline, the respiratory symptoms may not be due to a bacterial infection but rather a viral infection, in which case, an antibiotic won't treat if it is purely a viral infection. Sure it will treat secondary bacterial infections that may be going on as a result of the primary viral but I wouldn't rely on an antibiotic solely to treat this. I recommend using lysine supplementation. Many times in kittens, they pick up the herpes virus from the mother. Lysine works by lessening the severity and possibly shortening the duration of a herpes viral infection. Duralactin with Lysine is the supplement I recommend to help treat the infection which can be found online. If the infection worsens, a nebulizer may help and sometimes antibiotics are nebulized in severe cases. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hello, sorry to hear about Tig. You can try to wipe his nose often and make sure the air is humidified majority of the time. Most often the signs can last up to 5 days and then improve. In regards to the drooling, yes Doxycycline may cause nausea and vomitng which can present as excessive drooling. Additionally in cats, doxycycline can cause esophageal changes, so make sure when administering this medication you are chasing it with plenty of water. Give him the medications before or after a large meal to limit his GI signs. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor guy. Since the 1 eye is draining and it also looks irritated, he likely has a corneal scratch or ulcer. He also could have a bout of conjunctivitis which can be allergy related, but that typically affects both eyes and not just one. I am not sure what kind of eye drops you are using; however, most antibiotic eye ointment takes 3-4 days to show improvement. Also you should do the full course of treatment which is 7 consecutive days. If you do not have enough medication, then Chico needs to see your vet for a refill. Also I would recommend checking the expiration date on the medication to make sure it isn't expired! I hope that Chico's eye resolves soon. If he is not improved after the 3-4 day time period or if his eye seems to be getting worse or if you need new medication, then its best to take him in to your vet for further treatment. Hi and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cidofovir ophthalmic has a typical length of about 10 days and Famciclovir has a recommended duration of 2-4 weeks. Kittens less than 5 days old may only need only a 2 week treatment. The chloramphenicol length of time is determined by your prescribing veterinarian. This may be a virus and not a bacterial infection. If that's the case antibiotics will not help and the virus needs to run its course which can take up to two weeks. As long as she isn't getting worse, running a fever and is eating I would keep monitoring her. If at any time she does get worse or isn't getting any better after 7-10 days, I would call your veterinarian. Let her rest unless she wants to play. Poor Daisy! It can take the eye a little time to respond to the ointment, and sometimes it will get worse before better. I would apply the ointment 3 times a day if it is this bad. If the eye does not start to settle, or you notice cloudiness or redness on the eyeball itself, I would take her back to the vet as sometimes when the eye is sore they can scratch it and cause an ulcer on the eye itself, this can be serious.
