My cat is drooling excessively. Could it be rabies or a dental issue?

Hi there. I am so sorry to hear about Habla's drooling issue. When any animal is drooling in an area where rabies is a possibility, I always check to make sure the animal is vaccinated against rabies, and doesn't have any potential rabies exposure, like going outside all the time where there are stray or wild animals around. This is the most important thing to touch on first, since rabies is transmissible to humans, and can be fatal. If Hebla doesn't have any possible exposure, and is also vaccinated, then let's move along to the first two things that come to mind when cats are drooling. I usually find that there are either dental issues - diseased or fractured teeth, or nausea - from eating something out of the ordinary, or from infection or metabolic disease. I think it would be best to have Hebla seen by her veterinarian as soon as you can. They can make sure she isn't eating something caustic that can bother her mouth, make sure she doesn't have an infection of some kind, and that she is healthy otherwise. The vet can also check her teeth and make sure she doesn't have any fractured teeth or dental disease. Some cats, even young ones, can develop dental conditions that can cause chronic mouth pain and drooling. I hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck!

No if he was infected with rabies it would take much longer than that to have clinical signs. I would be more concerned about him having hurt his mouth in some way, or perhaps be somewhat sedated if he's on any pain medications. If it continues, I'd recommend going back for a recheck to see if they can see anything different in his mouth now that it's been a few days.

I suggest taking your cat to your veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency clinic as soon as possible. Excessive drooling in a cat can be a sign of a number of problems including (but not limited to) nausea, dental disease. Ingestion of a toxin, foreign object caught in the mouth, salivary gland disease, ulcers in the mouth, cancer of the mouth, neurological disorders, or eating something that tastes very bad. Excessive drooling is also a symptom of rabies. Many cats will chatter their teeth while watching birds or other prey animals; however, chattering could alos be an indication of pain or neurological in nature.

It is possible phantom has rabies but very unlikely. Rabies is not a common disease in out domestic animals. I would be concerned about a possible viral or infectious cause of oral pain. Calicivirus can cause oral ulcers and tongue ulcers in young cats. Typically the treatment for viral infections is supportive care and pain management. I would recommend taking Phantom to a vet for a closer exam. Also you can start a lysine supplement to help decrease viral replication. In the mean time you can try and feed wet food. This might be less painful to eat than hard. IT is also possible the hyper salivation and pain is due to an obstruction or nausea. Your vet will help determine the cause and provide proper treatment.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dilated eyes and drooling from the mouth are signs of either a neurological disease, or more likely a toxin. I would recommend getting a large box and a large thick blanket. I would suggest catching your cat with the blanket and getting him into a box, and bringing him into your vet for a check up. If he isn't vaccinated for rabies this could be a concern, as the behaviour is very strange, however as previously mentioned, a toxin is more likely. Best of luck with Autum.

I would be most suspicious of a calicivirus infection causing these signs. Calicivirus is a vaccine preventable disease that is mostly seen with kittens. This virus will cause ulcers in the mouth, which will cause it to bleed a little. This disease is often self-limiting, but can cause severe ulcers in certain cases, so it will definitely be good for the vet to check them in the next day or two. It's likely not an emergency though, so they should be fine to wait until then. I hope that helps and all is well with the cats.

I would be concerned about Zapatitos being nauseas, having infection or trauma inside the mouth or even a toxin if possible exposure. I would recommend taking her to a vet to have a good detailed exam to help narrow down why Zapatitos is hyper salivating. It is important to look under her tongue and make sure string is not attached causing a foreign body. Also you can look in her mouth to make sure you do not see any type of sores. Sometimes cats will chew electrical wires and get burns in the mouth or even have viruses that cause ulcers. All of these things can cause hyper salivation. I think a vet visit is best to help Zapatitos feel better as soon as possible.
