My cat peed blood after neutering. Is it an emergency or normal?

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 8 months and 17 days old | 7.5 lbs

9 month old male cat was neutered yesterday and is peeing blood. This has happened 2 times, an hour apart. He's not acting weird at all and he isn't acting like he's in any pain. He's not acting unusual when he pees, just leaving a small spot of diluted looking bloody pee about the area of the bottom of a plastic water bottle. Is he ok, or should I be rushing him to emergency care?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is not common to see blood in the urine in male cats after neutering. The blood yu are seeing may be from the incision site. In any case, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! With blood in the urine this may be a sign of a urinary infection and will require analysis of a sample to be sure. If it goes untreated it can lead to an obstruction which is an emergency. Your vet can talk to you about a diet change if this is a chronic problem to help prevent it

If you are noticing bloody urine it would be best to take the cat that is peeing blood to the vet ASAP. Stress can cause induce urinary infections and other issues, but it is also good to get any potential health conditions checked out and under control as well. There are prescription diets that can also help with stress-induced urinary issues.

Adding in a pheromone diffuser to shared rooms in the house is also a good idea to help reduce inter-cat stress. Making sure each cat has their own access to litter, food, water, hiding spots, etc can also help.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Felix had a urinary catheter placed. If this is the case then yes having some blood in the urine is expected. Let your veterinarian know tomorrow what happened overnight though yes that would be expected after catheterization. Good luck and have a good night!

I would recommend that you call the vet that performed the surgery. A small amount of blood noticed in the urine could be normal, but he would need to be examined by a vet to rule out possible concerning causes such as bleeding after surgery, hematoma, self-mutilation (don't allow him to lick at all!), urinary tract infection or stones, bleeding disorder, etc.

There is a chance that there was some trauma to the bladder area while removing the uterus which is located just above the cervix. Some light bleeding can be expected to occur for 1-3 days after surgery but copious amounts of blood or prolonged bleeding should be considered abnormal. I would recommend either taking your cat back to the previous veterinarian, since he/she did the surgery, for a follow-up visit for further care. Or if the trust has been broken with this vet, you can get kitty seen with another expert for an exam and potential urinalysis to ensure there isn't a UTI present that could explain the symptoms that mentioned. As long as there is an active flow of urine and no outward signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, bloated abdomen) then this sounds like a relatively non-emergency type situation that can be hopefully be resolved with medical treatment, if any.

My cat strains to pee after neutering, but still pees. Is it normal?

HI there! I'm so sorry to hear about Gulbi's troubles. Although there can be some discomfort following a neuter, I would definitely keep a close eye on Gulbi. Male cats can have a condition where they are unable to pee. Often we will say a cat "is blocked". This is a medical emergency because when an animal cannot urinate, it can back up their kidneys, and cause them to become toxic, very sick, and possibly pass away. I would continue to watch Gulbi as you are. He needs to produce a nice stream of urine, and large quantities of urine in the litter box. If there is any straining, especially frequent straining, or just tiny circles of urine in the litter box, then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. He may need some pain medications, and if he already has some, he may need some additional ones. It may be helpful to put Gulbi in a small room by himself for a couple of days, like the bathroom, with his litter box. This way you can keep an eye on his litter box and the amount of urine he is putting out. If he is licking at his neuter area, I would pick up a cone from the pet store. Also important is to bring Gulbi to see the vet if there is any swelling, redness, or discharge, like pus, around his neuter site. I hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck!

My kitten has bloody diarrhea 4 days after neutering. Is it normal?

It could be due to the anti-inflammatory/pain contro medications he was on or even stress from the procedure. Monitor him closely for now. If no improvement in the next day or so, have him evaluated by your veterinarian as anti-diarrhea medicationscan be startedat that time. Good luck!

My cat is bleeding again a week after neuter. What should I do?

Hi there. It can be normal to see a small amount of bleeding from the neuter site for a day or two after surgery, but in my experience, it would be unusual to still be seeing blood after a week. Because of this, I would recommend having Ryker rechecked by your vet to see if anything is wrong.

My male kitten had one-time blood on his private part. Is it serious?

If you haven't seen any problems since and there is no blood in his urine, I would not worry. It may be that you were seeing the very tip of his penis was out of he prepuce, (especially since he's not neutered) and it looks bright red. Why does my cat have erections after being neutered? Is it normal?

Yes, this can be normal. It could be Draco may have been doing this before, but you simply didn't notice, and now that you are paying closer attention to him due the fact he was neutered, you seeing this behavior. As long as everything else is normal, he's going to the litter box normally, this isn't an issue. It would be an issue if he was crying when he tried to pee, you saw blood in his urine, he was attempting to pee but could not, was going to the litter box multiple times in a short period of time, was peeing in small amounts frequently, and/or was very lethargic. If you see any of those signs, then it's an emergency and he would need to see a vet immediately. At this point in time, I do think what you are seeing is normal behavior, however.
