My cat has eosinophilic plaque. What meds can my vet prescribe?

Steroids and antibiotics are commonly used as well as trying a hypoallergenic food and getting Roxy on a flea preventative to rule out a flea allergy as the cause. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zorro. An esinophilic granuloma needs to be diagnosed by a surgical biopsy. There is typically an underlying allergy such as to something in the cat's diet, environment or even fleas that trigger this reaction. The lesions can be aggressive and typically need extensive treatment. In some cases, diet modification is needed as well as anti-inflammatory or even immunosuppressive therapy. I recommend seeking a second opinion with another veterinarian to be sure you have an accurate diagnosis. Then Zorro can receive the best care. I hope this information helps!

Eosinophillic granulomas and ulcers are a symptom of an underlying allergy. It is best if you work with your vet to help alleviate the allergy - as continued steroid shots are not recommended in the long term. I usually start with making sure he is on an excellent flea control product every month without fail (and any other pets in the house as well). If BearBear goes outdoors, I suggest also performing a full environmental flea treatment - fleas are the biggest trigger for these lesions. The next step is a prescription hypoallergenic diet. There are 3 main excellent brands available - Hill's, Royal Canin and Purina Rx. Finally, if BearBear is still reacting despite these changes, you may wish to consider either Atopica for cats (toxo testing needed first), or oral steroids that you would give daily or every other day. Compounded varieties may be needed if you struggle to give him pills

Hello. It is very difficult to diagnose a skin problem just by looking at it, & certainly harder by a picture. If this is similar to what your other cat has, then I might be suspicious of a mange mite called Demodex gatoi. I would first talk to your vet about treating both cats ( & any others in the house ) with Bravecto, just to rule this out ( it is also great for fleas). For EG, some cats will respond nicely to occasional steroid injections. You can also do a hypoallergenic diet trial to rule out a food allergy. Antihistamines sometimes will control symptoms, especially Certirizine ( your veterinarian can recommend a dose ), & some cats are being treated with a relatively new medication for allergies in dogs called Apoquel. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think at this point it seems like your veterinarian has tried symptomatic therapy to try to help. I would consider taking a culture of the lesion and using the indicated antibiotics. Also, it would be important to ensure that he is unable to chew or lick at it as that will continue to worsen it. You could consider an e-collar which you may get from your local pet store. If it does not resolve, a biopsy of the lesion should be considered. Good luck and have a good day!

Steroids can be indicating is allergic dermatitis but have extreme side effects when used at high doses or long term. I would not recommend this as a long term course. Any steroid over time leads to a resistance where it just won't work anymore and can lead to liver problems and diabetes in cats. Prednisolone is better tolerated and seems to work better in generally in cats compared to dexamethasone. There is a medicine called Atopica or Apoquel that is made for allergic skin disease and does what the steroids do just without the side effects and resistance, so you may be better trying one of those instead. All are prescription medicines so you will have to call your vet to see if they can fill this since they already have a medical report on her. I would stay on the hypoallergenic diet as this can take 2-3 months for max affect and treats count as far as food allergy go, so make sure those are hypoallergenic or don't give any. I would consider a treatment for mange and fleas also. It is not common in cats but causes them to be itchy and it is hard to prove and super easy to just treat to be safe.

Is it dry skin or scabs? If dry skin you can try adding some fish oil or using a fish based food. You can get the fish oil for animals online. This may or may not help. If it is scabbing then steroids would be the best for this. I am wondering if he had a DepoMedrol injection. This is a long acting steroid that works well with cats when they have scabbing on their skin. You also have to make sure there is no obvious infection going on with Blu's skin. This would require antibiotics. If Blu was a dog there are different shampoos and topical stuff for them but I would not bathe a cat unless absolutely necessary.
