Why is my cat's recurring hair loss & red skin eosinophilic granuloma?

Oh goodness! Poor Gizmo! Often looking under the microscope at a quick smear of the fluid from the lesion can give your veterinarian a good idea if eosinophilic complex is possible. If the cells do not support that diagnosis then a biopsy may be recommended. Often these lesions also have a secondary infection so often I use antibiotics as well as steroids to resolve the lesions. Hi, I think one of the first conditions to rule out here would be eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC) which refers to a group of inflammatory skin problems in cats. The skin lesion on the picture may be an eosinophilic plaque. Common sites are the hind legs and the stomach. The lesions can be large and may be itchy, and the cat may frequently tries to licks and even bites at the affected site which can make it worse. Most cases of ECG are due to allergies ( fleas /food/ atopy=environmental). Flea control is very important in the treatment. Most cases respond well to medical treatment with corticosteroids (prednisolone commonly) and antibiotic if infected. She will need to be checked by a vet to confirm and to be treated. Hello. Without an actual hands on diagnosis, it is difficult to tell exactly what this is, but it does resemble a condition call eosinophilic plaques. If this is what you are dealing with, the condition is frequently associated with underlying allergic disease & tend to respond very quickly to glucocorticoids. The allergies can be to fleas, food, something in the environment & even other insect hypersensitivities like to mosquitoes. The cornerstone to therapy is trying to identify & manage the underlying cause(s). If this is done, the prognosis is excellent for a very manageable condition. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zorro. An esinophilic granuloma needs to be diagnosed by a surgical biopsy. There is typically an underlying allergy such as to something in the cat's diet, environment or even fleas that trigger this reaction. The lesions can be aggressive and typically need extensive treatment. In some cases, diet modification is needed as well as anti-inflammatory or even immunosuppressive therapy. I recommend seeking a second opinion with another veterinarian to be sure you have an accurate diagnosis. Then Zorro can receive the best care. I hope this information helps!

Pepper may be suffering from allergic skin where her skin will overreact to something such as grass, fleas or dust etc, then swelling and infection can develop. This tends to effect the skin in large areas rather than in smaller clumps. If it is random well defined areas that are breaking out I suspect she may have eosinophilic granuloma complex, which is a condition in cats where essentially the skin damages itself. It causes nasty red wet lesions and sometimes ulcers and lumps. I think either way Pepper needs treatment so will need to see the vet. They will likely give an antibiotic injection to tackle any infection. The key of treatment will be managing the immune system which will likely be done with steroids.

Hi there. So sorry that Pitir is having this issue. It looks to me like she may have a form of Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex - the eosinophilic plaques. This is a very complex syndrome and it is not as simple as just giving a cortisone injection. That will placate the symptoms for a while but will does not address the underlying problem. My best advice is for you to take her to a veterinary dermatologist and get the testing done to get first the proper diagnosis and then to get the proper treatment to hopefully prevent future flare-ups. Chances are you will not cure her 100% (if she does have what I think she has). However, you can likely minimize her flare-ups significantly once you figure out what the underlying problem is. What you are seeing on Luna may be insect bites or a skin condition known as eosinophilic granuloma complex. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Luna so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
