My cat eats litter and poop. Could this cause constipation or be serious?

Sounds like Mau Mau is very constipated! The liquid you see may be coming around the hard stool in his colon. The belching could be a sign that gas isn't moving down so it comes up instead. Being in the curled up position more than normal may mean his belly hurts. You can try gently rubbing his tummy for comfort and to stimulate his bowel to move the firm stool. But if it continues much longer, you should have him re-examined by your vet for additional treatments or sedation to remove the firm stool. He may also need to go on a special food to prevent further constipation. This is a common issue in cats.

Poor Paws! Yes, in some cases severe constipation can certainly cause these symptoms in cats. It's good that he's being treated for this problem - hopefully he's acting better now! Poor girl. It sounds very likely Lola has an internal problem causing her to have an accident outside the box as well as a decrease in her appetite. This could very well be constipation, since constipated cats will strain and can often-times get nausea causing them to eat less or even vomit sometimes. I would highly recommend getting her seen by your vet soon to have her fully evaluated via physical exam to see if constipation is the underlying cause for her illness. I'm sorry to hear that this is going on with your cat. The corn in the diet should not cause any urinary problems and it generally very safe and a very common ingredient in many cat foods. Oftentimes when a cat is peeing outside of the littler box it is because of a urinary tract infection or cystitis (inflammation of the bladder wall). When the cat has one of these conditions it can make it painful to urinate and the cat associates the pain with the litter box and thus starts going outside of the box. This could explain her constipation as well. If she is not frequenting the litter box and holding in her bowel movements it can cause her to become constipated. I would recommend making sure the litter box is cleaned frequently (twice a day) because some cats can be finicky when it comes to using a dirty litter box. I would also definitely recommend keeping your appointment with your vet. They may test the urine for infection and can give you a recommendation on a good, balanced diet for Inara. Good luck!

Hello, sorry to hear about Mario. I wish him a speedy recovery. It sounds like his constipation is associated with his decreased appetite and decreased activity. As he continues to regain his appetite and move more then he will begin to defecate as well. Cats often are not constipated but are having diarrhea. With her age I would be concerned about a disease causing a decreased appetite. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for blood work and possible x-rays. At this age kidney disease, cancer and hyperthyroidism are very common. Also bad dental disease can cause a change in appetite. She most likely has an underlying disease that is causing her these secondary issues. I do not think changing her diet will be enough to make her feel better. A veterinarian visit is best. Hope she feels better soon

I would be worried about constipation. If he is having trouble passing stool they will get blood and mucus. They will also vomit when they are constipated. He may need an enema to help remove the feces. They may be able to feel his belly and see if they feel hard stool present or they may want to take xrays. Try and encourage as much water as possible and if he will eat canned food try that. The high moisture content can help. IF it continues they will want to see him and give an enema and possibly put him on a stool softener.
