My cat eats cockroaches and lizards. How can I stop her? Is it safe?

My cat eats cockroaches and lizards. Whenever I spot her I stop her but I am not always there with her and later I find the leftovers of these creatures. Now what can I do to stop her? Are these things dangerous for her health?

Hello, sorry to hear about Parvo. Cats are naturally hunters and thus this behavior may be part of her instinct. However, this may also be caused from a dietary insufficiency. I would recommend that you make sure Paro is being offered a well balanced commercial diet.

Eating lizards may predispose her to some parasites, but these vary by region so your local veterinarian may be able to offer better advise on what risk Paro may be at if she continues to eat these lizards.

Monitor for any signs of vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, and yellow tinged gums. If you note any, then contact your veterinarian to have her evaluated. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My cat ate a house gecko. Is it dangerous? What should I do now?

The gecko itself should pose no risk other than possibly mild gastrointestinal upset. It is another source of protein for your cat. Geckos can harbor parasites such as liver flukes or other intestinal worms though. It would be best if you can prevent Vanilla from ingesting them. Regular exams and deworming would be recommended to keep her healthy. Feed a bland diet for a few days if she vomits or has diarrhea eating one. See your vet if the GI upset does not resolve.

The cat will not get any viruses from eating a lizard but, she can get intestinal parasites. I suggest you get her vaccinations started and have her dewormed because she needs them but I would not be overly concerned about her eating this one lizard. It should not be harmful to you in any way. I don't know if you are asking specifically about rabies but you do not have to worry about rabies. Reptiles (like lizards) do not get or carry rabies; only mammals.

The lizard your kitten ate may have upset her tummy. She may vomit, drool excessively, and not want to eat for a few days while the lizard is still in her stomach. If this behavior continues for more than 48 hours I would recommend taking her in the see the vet. My cat keeps eating bugs and insects. Is this safe for her health?

Some parasites and insects can be carriers of bacteria as well as other infectious agents. However this is not an uncommon behavior in cats and certainly not every cat that eats a bug will get sick. Keeping Pearl on a flea/tick preventative will help prevent some of the more common infections. Be careful about applying any agent to prevent bugs as they can be toxic to cats.

Is it safe for my cat to eat household cockroaches or soil from plants?

Yes it is a problem if Elvis does this. The soil could container fertilizer which has chemicals that aren't safe for him to ingest, and the exoskeleton of the cockroach be hard on a cat's stomach leading to vomiting. I hope this helps!
