My cat's ear infection is worsening: discharge, odor, shaking head.

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

His left ear only has symptoms of ear mites but also ear infection. The vet said he was fine but he has gotten worse in the last two weeks He shakes his head and scratches a lot that one ear. Has brownish discharge and chunks and odor. And he has been drooling. had oral work done 3 days before I adopted him 3 weeks ago but his ear looks worse. The vet said he was healthy and would recover but I’m not seeing it. And I’m very worried. He is the sweetest cat I have ever had and met.

Poor Domino! Ear infections can sometimes take a little while to heal completely I recommend calling your vet to schedule a recheck appointment, as your vet will likely want to examine the ear canal, and possibly check a swab of the ear under a microscope to see how the treatment is progressing. In the meantime, keep treating Domino as directed by your vet. He certainly is a cute little guy, and lucky to have a caring new owner!
