My cat is shaking head, has ear discharge & mites. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Cat | Scottish Fold | Male | 2 months and 19 days old

I noticed my cat shake his head alot i tried to clean his ears it was full of ear wax or brown discharge but i couldnt get clean it well after one hour i looked in his ears again and i noticed tiny little mites moving in his ears its so scary .. is it something serious!! I’m really worried !

It sounds like Pojii could have ear mites. You usually can't see ear mites without a microscope but they could be moving ear wax around. Other types of mites, lice and fleas could also be near the ears. Ear mites usually cause a very dark, dry waxy debris in the ears and can cause secondary ear infections. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian for a diagnosis - they might take a swab from the ears and examine it under the microscope - and treatment options. Ear mites and ear infections are not particularly serious and are easily treatable, but if they are untreated they could lead to permanent damage to the ear.

Ear mites is possible but in an indoor only kitty it is less likely and the more likely cause would be a bacterial or yeast infection of the ear, or a foreign body stuck in the ear. I would recommend a vet visit. This is likely to be caused by the proliferation of a certain yeast called Malassezia spp. In the pic the quantity of discharge does not seem a lot and does not look like there is any inflammation.. An ear cleaner like canaural or sancerum could easily resolve this presentation.

Why is my kitten scratching ears and shaking head with no ear mites?

Poor Toby! He could have a middle ear infection caused by yeast or bacteria that you cannot see. His symptoms do indicate a problem with his ears, and I would take him into the vet today or tomorrow for an exam. The vet can look down his ears with an otoscope to see if he does have an infection, and can treat him for it. It's important to have any ear problem examined and treated promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss.

My kitten's ears are waxy and itchy. Is it an infection or mites?

It is difficult to diagnose an ear infection without examining the discharge under a microscope to see if there are any bacteria, yeast, or mites. Based on the pictures, it does not appear to be a large amount of discharge. There aren't any OTC ear medications for infections but you could clean the ear with just an ear cleaner labeled for cats and see if that helps. Clean three times a week for now and then once weekly and see if that gets rid of all the discharge. If not, he really needs to go to a vet for treatment.

Because ear mites cause severe itchiness and can lead to more serious bacterial ear infections it is best to treat Mozart. It is also possible that Mozart already has a bacterial or yeast ear infection as this can look similar to ear mites. I recommend taking Mozart to see a veterinarian so they can take a swab from his ear and determine the cause of the ear infection.
