My cat has crusty ears, pus, shakes head. Is it mites or an infection?

Pet's info: Cat | Birman | Male | neutered | 14 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

Hello. Looking for advice about my cat's ear. There is quite a bit of smear and crust at the back and some kind of pus near the front corner. Looks like this could be from a wound? Or could this be an infection? He doesnt seem completely bothered by it but shakes his head and scratches sometimes... Thanks for your help.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks possibly consistent with ear mites. If not, an ear infection would be considered likely. I recommend you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so this suspicion can be confirmed and he can be treated for it. Treatment usually result in quick relief. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear about Jacoby. It looks like he could possibly have ear mites https://www.vin.com/veterinarypartner/default.aspx?pid=19239&species=All&id=4951535 , or an ear infection with bacteria or yeast. These conditions require medication to treat, and different medication is used depending on the condition. I would recommend making an appointment for Jacoby to have his ears examined. The vet will take a swab from the ear to look at under the microscope to determine if mites, bacteria, or yeast are present, which will help guide treatment.

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in cats, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take Celestian to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.

Ear infections can be bacterial and/or fungal in origin. If left untreated, simple external ear infections can progress to middle or inner ear infections, leading to vestibular disease or even central nervous system signs. I recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have Mimi checked for an ear infection. He/she will likely perform an ear cytology, meaning he/she will swab her ear and look at the material under a microscope. My cat's dirty ears: mites or wax? I cleaned with peroxide, what next?

If he truly has mites, they are not going to completely go away with the peroxide so if the ears get dirty again as before, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My cat is shaking head, has ear discharge & mites. Is it serious?

It sounds like Pojii could have ear mites. You usually can't see ear mites without a microscope but they could be moving ear wax around. Other types of mites, lice and fleas could also be near the ears. Ear mites usually cause a very dark, dry waxy debris in the ears and can cause secondary ear infections. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian for a diagnosis - they might take a swab from the ears and examine it under the microscope - and treatment options. Ear mites and ear infections are not particularly serious and are easily treatable, but if they are untreated they could lead to permanent damage to the ear.

My Persian cat has dark ear gunk & scratches. Mites or infection?

It is possible that Motu may have a bacterial and /or yeast infection of the ear. It is also possible, but less likely that he has been reinfected with ear mites. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Do not clean the ear so that your veterinarian had debris present to assist in making the diagnosis. Judging from the photos you have provided, I would suspect this to be a severe allergic reaction or something such as a cancerous skin condition of the ear pinna.
