My cat drinks lots of water with dry food. Are toppers enough protein?

Wet food does have a higher moisture content, so your cat may be getting enough water from the wet food that he doesn't need to drink anything additional. It's good that you see him drink a lot of water when he eats dry food, and you can add some more water to his wet food if you want just to make sure he is getting enough water :-)

Great question! No, it's not necessary to give Suzy wet cat food as well, the dry kitten food will provide her will all the nutrition she needs. You can give her some as a treat occasionally, and make sure she has plenty of fresh water to drink. I hope this helps!

One of the things we have found is that wet food is actually healthier for cats than dry food. I feed my cats wet food only. It is better for their kidneys long term and seems to help prevent obesity since dry food has to have carbohydrates in it that cats can't utilize well. He likely isn't drinking a ton of water because he is already getting his daily requirements through his food. Boiled chicken retains a good amount of water and if you are making sure he also drinks water run off from the food, then he is probably getting enough already. Cats aren't big water drinkers anyway so don't feel like you are doing anything wrong. I would suggest placing a pet water fountain (from your local pet store) in your home to encourage him to drink more. Also I would not recommend just feeding him chicken alone because this is not a complete diet for a cat and he is likely to become deficient in a lot of vitamins and minerals he needs, especially Taurine. He need a well balanced high quality kitten food such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet or Innova. You can go with a wet canned food as well to increase his water intake and he will likely be just fine. Best of luck with your kitty!

This sounds very frustrating! I'm glad to hear that Rose is active and at a healthy body weight, but eating solely chicken and tuna does not provide a balanced diet for a growing kitten. Since Rose is willing to eat the chicken and tuna, try shredding these foods into very tiny pieces. Then begin mixing chicken and tuna in with her kitten foods. Start by mixing the foods 50/50, then gradually wean off the chicken and tuna. If this is not successful, you may need to try other brands, textures, or flavors of kitten foods. Some cats prefer kibble to canned foods, so that is one other thing to try. By 2.5 months of age, there is no need to continue giving her the kitten milk replacer, as water alone is sufficient. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it Noushmc is otherwise acting 100% normal I think she will be fine. Just watch her closely. Also if she eats an all canned food diet there is a lot of water in that so animals will drink less. Or she could be drinking water from somewhere else (toilet, sink...puddle outside). Wet food is actually biologically a better food for cats. Dry food is easier for humans, but cats are desert animals and tend to run a little dehydrated if fed only a dry food diet. Since Spunkers already likes wet food, you should be able to easily transition her over to a wet food diet. However, since you have noticed that Spunkers is drinking more water than normal, I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian and run some routine bloodwork and a urinalysis to make sure there aren't any metabolic changes that are causing the change in her water intake. A canned food diet is always a good idea for cats, but we also need to make sure there isn't anything else going on that needs to be treated. I hope that was helpful.
