My cat is drooling and not giving affectionate bites. Is a vet needed?

From the photo her tongue looks like it may be swollen with a blister on the tip. Excessive drooling for several days can be from a burn on the tongue, something caustic that irritated her mouth, or something stuck in her teeth. Please give her wet food with added water, and continue to give water by syringe if she’s not drinking. I recommend a veterinary exam to find the reason for her symptoms, and get treatment. I suggest taking your cat to your veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency clinic as soon as possible. Excessive drooling in a cat can be a sign of a number of problems including (but not limited to) nausea, dental disease. Ingestion of a toxin, foreign object caught in the mouth, salivary gland disease, ulcers in the mouth, cancer of the mouth, neurological disorders, or eating something that tastes very bad. Excessive drooling is also a symptom of rabies. Many cats will chatter their teeth while watching birds or other prey animals; however, chattering could alos be an indication of pain or neurological in nature.

Oh no poor Honey! Yes she should be seen by a vet because these are very concerning signs. Any history of trauma? These could be signs of pain, nausea, or something wrong inside her mouth (ulcers, stomatitis, a mass, foreign material). Cats can develop something called gingivostomatitis as well as feline oral resoptive lesions. These are both very painful and require antibiotics and sometimes steroids as well as dental procedures to correct. Also if there's any possibility she chewed something like electric cord or plant that can calls the signs as well. I recommend Dusk be checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible. This is to prevent her from becoming dehydrated and malnourished from not eating. Do not give her any human medications as they are very toxic to cats and I'll make the situation worse.

I would be concerned about Zapatitos being nauseas, having infection or trauma inside the mouth or even a toxin if possible exposure. I would recommend taking her to a vet to have a good detailed exam to help narrow down why Zapatitos is hyper salivating. It is important to look under her tongue and make sure string is not attached causing a foreign body. Also you can look in her mouth to make sure you do not see any type of sores. Sometimes cats will chew electrical wires and get burns in the mouth or even have viruses that cause ulcers. All of these things can cause hyper salivation. I think a vet visit is best to help Zapatitos feel better as soon as possible.

Typically excess salivation is either caused by nausea or pain (oral or abdominal), although this is not an all inclusive list. There can still be oral disease present, especially if these missing teeth were not removed but fell out. Cats can get resorptive lesions of their teeth which can be really painful and the changes can be hard for owners to detect. They can also get lesions in their mouth (stomatitis, a mass, ulcers, etc.) that an owner may not see. Additionally diseases of other body systems may cause drooling (kidneys, gi, etc ). I would recommend your kitty seeing a vet for a thourough oral exam and blood work to start. A good oral exam will likely require sedation and perhaps dental xrays.
