My cat is drooling for days. What causes it? Can I treat at home?

This can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. If this continues or she develops vomiting, I recommend that you have Callie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Excessive drooling in a cat is almost always from some type of issues inside the mouth - like he tasted something (like maybe a plant) that didn't taste good or there is a problem with a tooth (broken or infected). Other options: nausea, ulceration in the mouth and kidney disease. The best I can tell you to do at home is rinse the mouth with plain tap water. You can him some human antacid medication but I don't know what you have available to you so if you would like to see what products you have and post again we can help you with how much to give him.

From the photo her tongue looks like it may be swollen with a blister on the tip. Excessive drooling for several days can be from a burn on the tongue, something caustic that irritated her mouth, or something stuck in her teeth. Please give her wet food with added water, and continue to give water by syringe if she’s not drinking. I recommend a veterinary exam to find the reason for her symptoms, and get treatment. Typically excess salivation is either caused by nausea or pain (oral or abdominal), although this is not an all inclusive list. There can still be oral disease present, especially if these missing teeth were not removed but fell out. Cats can get resorptive lesions of their teeth which can be really painful and the changes can be hard for owners to detect. They can also get lesions in their mouth (stomatitis, a mass, ulcers, etc.) that an owner may not see. Additionally diseases of other body systems may cause drooling (kidneys, gi, etc ). I would recommend your kitty seeing a vet for a thourough oral exam and blood work to start. A good oral exam will likely require sedation and perhaps dental xrays. There is a possi There isn't anything over the counter that will work for nausea in cats unfortunately, but you can fast him for the next 12 hrs to see if his stomach settles. Then offer him a small amount of tuna or boiled chicken and rice at his next few feedings. Hopefully he keeps everything down over the next 12-24 hrs. If he did hae a transient stomach bug then things should pass by then. If not, then its best to have him examined by your local vet for further testing and medical treatment. I suggest taking your cat to your veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency clinic as soon as possible. Excessive drooling in a cat can be a sign of a number of problems including (but not limited to) nausea, dental disease. Ingestion of a toxin, foreign object caught in the mouth, salivary gland disease, ulcers in the mouth, cancer of the mouth, neurological disorders, or eating something that tastes very bad. Excessive drooling is also a symptom of rabies. Many cats will chatter their teeth while watching birds or other prey animals; however, chattering could alos be an indication of pain or neurological in nature.

I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She could be dealing with severe dental disease or other disease in her mouth. The drooling could also be a sign of nausea so I would also recommend having her blood tested to see if there are any systemic changes that could be causing the drooling / nausea. You may even consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora which can be found online quite easily or at your local pet store. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
