My cat is drooling, has pink eyes. Is it his new food or something else?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 10 lbs

Last night I saw drool by my cat? Also, his eyes were pinkish/squinty, not discharge yet, but he rubbed at them. Everything else was normal - eat, drink, pee, poop, play, sleep. Today he was laying down (sleeping?), and it was wet where his head was again - only notice this after he is laying down! I changed his food 2 weeks ago from BLUE Wilderness® Adult Cat Food - Grain Free, Natural, Chicken to BLUE™ Indoor Health Salmon & Brown Rice Indoor Adult Cat Food. Is it that or is something wrong?

The drool is likely due to something hurting his mouth rather than anything to due with his food. Cats can get sore mouths from chewing on things that they shouldn't (i.e. electrical cords), dental disease, certain infections, or other oral diseases. I do not see evidence of eye problems, but if there is, then I would be more suspicious of an infection causing this. Otherwise, I would need to look in his mouth to help narrow-down the cause of this. You can try to look in his mouth and see if anything looks abnormal. If you do notice something abnormal, then it's best to have your vet see him sometime soon, so they can advise on the necessary treatment.

There is definitely no need to change the food at this time and it's best to continue feeding his normal diet to prevent any gastrointestinal disturbances.

The drooling can be a sign of nausea in cats, but given that Rex hasn't had a change in activity, appetite, or anything else, I would keep an eye on him for now. It could be chewing on those plants has upset his stomach, and I would keep them out of reach. Try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he's still drooling in another 24 hours after being on this diet or anything else changes from the normal, then I would have him seen by a vet.

Why is my senior cat drooling thick, sticky, foul-smelling saliva?

Typically excess salivation is either caused by nausea or pain (oral or abdominal), although this is not an all inclusive list. There can still be oral disease present, especially if these missing teeth were not removed but fell out. Cats can get resorptive lesions of their teeth which can be really painful and the changes can be hard for owners to detect. They can also get lesions in their mouth (stomatitis, a mass, ulcers, etc.) that an owner may not see. Additionally diseases of other body systems may cause drooling (kidneys, gi, etc ). I would recommend your kitty seeing a vet for a thourough oral exam and blood work to start. A good oral exam will likely require sedation and perhaps dental xrays. I will typically treat with anti-nausea medication to see if it helps. If not, make sure that he is not eating anything that he shouldn't (plants, etc). My 7-year-old cat won't eat, is drooling, and can't sleep. What to do?

Poor guy. I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet for some bloodwork analysis. A cat that isn't eating is considered to be a serious thing, because cats are known to be masters at hiding illness, unless it is something serious going on. Drooling is a sign of nausea, which can be caused by just about every condition out there, so it is necessary to get some testing down to hopefully pinpoint the problem. I am not sure how deep the scrape on his nose is, but I would not consider it to be a factor in his current illness, especially if it is just a superficial wound that is not infected. If you cannot get him in right away you can try enticing him with some tuna and white rice or slightly warmed cans of baby food for now. But a vet visit is needed as soon as possible.
