My cat won't take doxycycline. Can I crush it or use liquid?

Hello. Both the Cerenia & Doxycycline can be crushed & mixed with just about any food or liquid you like. The Doxycycline will be very bitter tasting if just mixed with water, so you might try hiding it in any type of food except dairy. Avoid any milk or cheese with this antibiotic. Hi there. Yes, you should be able to get it compounded into a flavored liquid (like chicken or fish) if this would be easier for you to give. You may have a local compounding pharmacy that can do this, or you can use an online pharmacy like Wedgewood or Vets First Choice. I would recommend calling your veterinarian tomorrow to talk about this - he/she should be able to tell you where you can have this done, and can write a new prescription for the compounded medication.

The other thing that I would suggest that works great is putting them in pill pockets which you can buy from your local pet store or online. They are very palatable so they tend to like them. Azithromycin disolves very badly in water, you should speak to your vet or pharmacist about adjusting her prescription for a suspension/syrup which is formulated as a liquid and diluted appropriately so as to retain activity

Doxycycline should be taken whole or immediately before food to ensure it is swallowed into the stomach, it should then be followed by a drink to ensure it is washed down. It can cause painful ulcers in the upper GI tract if it lodges here and is not taken directly to the stomach

YEs, it is ok to break up the dewormer but I would recommend mixing it with something strong smelling and oily such as fish oil or a mousse textured food. Many dewormers are bitter in taste and hard to disolve and so difficulty in administration is heightened by mixing in water

Hello there and thank you for your post! I am not sure what medication you are trying to hide, but you could potentially have it compounded into a liquid form if that is easier. I've had clients use pieces of canned tuna to mash around the pill and that seemed to work well. I've had other clients use pieces of liverwurst to mash around the pill as well. You could also invest in a Pill Popper, which you can find in pet stores. Basically, a Pill Popper is a syringe like device that contains a hollow rubber tip which you can insert capsules or pills and safely administer them into the back of your cat's mouth.
