Can I open my puppy's doxycycline capsule to mix with food or treats?

This is unlikely to cause any issue but doxycycline can be quite irritant to the throat and gullet if it stays lodged without food to carry it down to the stomach. It should always be followed by eating a small amount of food or a drink as a precaution against this

Hello. Both the Cerenia & Doxycycline can be crushed & mixed with just about any food or liquid you like. The Doxycycline will be very bitter tasting if just mixed with water, so you might try hiding it in any type of food except dairy. Avoid any milk or cheese with this antibiotic. Yes in two hours the tablet should have been absorbed and dissolved already. This medication must be given with food and water as well as can cause oesophageal inflammation. I would suggest to wait until next dosage and I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I’m assuming both dogs are about the same weight. If so the doxycycline could cause vomiting or upset stomach but there would be no other major concerns. If one of your dogs is smaller you should repost your question. Be sure to let your vet know and to get a refill so the prescription can be finished.

If your veterinarian recommends Doxycycline for Samson I would go ahead and give it. The benefit of the medication most likely outweighs any risk that it may have on Sampson. Doxycycline does not typically affect the growth but can affect tooth enamel when given to very young puppies. Since Sampson is 10 months old he shouldn’t have this issue at all. I hope this helps. You certainly can. Make sure the food is mixed well as the medication can have a bitter taste. If your dog detects it, he may not eat the food. If he will allow it, slide it as far back in his mouth as you can then hold his muzzle closed as you stroke his throat. Once you see him lick his nose, you'll know he swallowed the capsule. Praise him and offer a small treat afterwards.

As long as she is getting the full dose, there is no cause for concern. If breaking them open and pouring out the contents works, then so be it. You are not doing anything wrong. You can try Pill Pockets, which can be found in the local Petco or you can hide the capsule in a piece of hot dog.
