My overweight cat has matted fur & red, inflamed anus. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

My cat has gained some weight. And we’re trying to get him to loose some. But he cannot clean himself anymore and it has caused some matting near his anus. The area has feces matted to the fur. The anus seems to be enflamed and red. I’ve clean off the area as much as I can. But it also looks like the fur is coming off as well.

Poor guy. If he won't tolerate you trying to clean the area well with some cat shampoo and water, then he may just have to be sedated by your vet and have the area clipped and cleaned. Also if there is inflammation, then the vet can make sure there isn't also an infection on the skin that requires a short course of antibiotics to resolve. I'm sure Louis will feel much better once this is taken care of. Best of luck moving forward. Take care.
