My cat died after dental issues and facial swelling. Was it sepsis?

I am very sorry your dog died. Since your dog needed a dental cleaning, I am assuming that he had a lot of tartar and inflammation and possibly one or more rotten teeth. This means there were many bacteria present in the mouth and due to the inflammation these bacteria managed to get into the circulatory system and caused the sepsis. I suggest you discuss this with your veterinarian as he has your dog's veterinary medical history and can better explain this to you.

I am very sorry your Missy passed. It is safe to say the the teeth cleaning under anesthesia 6 months ago was not the cause for this, especially since her pre-surgical exam and blood work did not show any abnormalities. Seeing that she was fairly old, there is a possibility she developed a heart condition in the past few months, or she also may have had a sudden blood clot that was fatal. The only way to find out would be to send her to a pathology lab for a post mortem. Again, I am very sorry you lost your baby. At least she did not suffer with a long painful condition.

I'm so sorry you lost your cat so suddenly! An upper respiratory infection would not typically cause seizures. An upper respiratory infection can occasionally cause pneumonia or severe dehydration that could be life threatening but you would probably see other signs like trouble breathing or extreme lethargy. A heart murmur may or may not be related to underlying heart disease, but if there was heart disease present it could potentially lead to a seizure and sudden death. If he died recently you could consider taking him to your vet for a post mortem exam (autopsy) to try to determine what the cause may have been, but it can be difficult to know for certain.

Without an autopsy, one can't be certain, but most often in a cat without any other clinical signs, it's usually a bad heart that will cause sudden death. One of the most most common heart diseases in cats is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It often has no symptoms. It is often not detectable on a physical exam. Yes! I would take him to the vet for an exam. The swelling you are seeing is due to infection. Over time the infection will loosen the dental ligaments and the teeth will fall out. This is a painful condition and should be addressed with a dental cleaning, some antibiotics and maybe a long term antimicrobial rinse for the mouth that you can do at home. I’m so sorry this happened. This is a better question for a lawyer or the veterinary board in your state. I will say that it is very common for cats to have subclinical heart disease that is not obvious on routine pre-anesthetic testing or a physical exam. I’m wondering if you’ve tried discussing your concerns with your vet as well.

I am so very sorry to hear about your loss of Caster. There are many different things that can cause death after a surgery, ranging from infection, unknown cardiac (heart) issues, aspiration pneumonia, adverse/allergic reaction to drugs used during anesthesia, and more. The only way to truly determine the cause of death would be a necropsy. I am very sorry for your sudden loss, I am sure you are heartbroken and frustrated.
