Can I sue my vet for negligence after my cat died from heart issue?

Hello. I am so, so sorry for the loss of your kitty. There is really no way to know if this was a surgical/medical error, if there was any underlying health concerns, or just really bad luck that she had so many problems after her surgery. Without a necropsy, there is no way to see or understand why this happened. You can contact your state board of veterinary medical examiners & lodge a complaint. They will ask for the surgical records & if something is amiss, they will investigate. That is about all you can do. Hello and I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your kitty. It is so heart breaking to lose them. Without an autopsy, one can't be certain, but most often in a cat without any other clinical signs, it's usually a bad heart that will cause sudden death. One of the most most common heart diseases in cats is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It often has no symptoms. It is often not detectable on a physical exam. Sometimes there will be fluid in the lungs from congestion in the lungs that can leak out after passing. I hope this helps to provide some closure and with time, I hope your heart heals. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your kitten! How awful. No, it's not at all common for an otherwise healthy animal to pass away in recovery after surgery, but it does occasionally happen - a horrible nightmare for everyone involved. If you want to try and determine what may have caused Yeti's death, I would recommend asking for an autopsy to be done (called a necropsy in animals). Some possible causes of a sudden anesthetic death like this would include an occult cardiomyopathy (meaning a heart problem that was not showing any symptoms and could not have been detected beforehand), or an allergic reaction to one of the anesthesia drugs that were used. I can tell that you're very upset, and I don't blame you. I would recommend sitting down to talk with your vet so that you can ask them to explain exactly what happened and give any additional information that they may have about his exam findings, the surgery itself, etc. to help you understand why he may have died. They may not know why either, but they should be willing to talk with you and do their best to answer your questions. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I am so very sorry you lost Honey so suddenly! Without having seen her in person, I can only give my best guess, unfortunately. It could be that signs of heart disease were subtle and weren't detected on the pre-anesthetic exam (such as a murmur), and that's why it was missed. Hello. I am so sorry for your loss. It is very hard to say if this was preventable, but quite likely, it was not. This degree of heart disease in such a young puppy would have come from a congenital birth defect, a fairly common occurrence in this breed of dog. If a murmur was picked up early enough, an electrocardiogram would have been able to pinpoint the problem, & the next step would have been open heart surgery. This was absolutely not negligence by your veterinarian. Birth defects do happen in animals, just like in people. Some are manageable, others, like this are sadly not, unless you go to extraordinary measures. I know you are sad about this loss. You didn't do anything wrong and although the symptoms might not have been there, it doesn't mean the condition wasn't developing slowly without you being able to notice it. unfortunately this is bad news, but with the right treatment you could buy her a good quality of life for the next 1-2 years.

I am so very sorry to hear about your loss of Caster. There are many different things that can cause death after a surgery, ranging from infection, unknown cardiac (heart) issues, aspiration pneumonia, adverse/allergic reaction to drugs used during anesthesia, and more. The only way to truly determine the cause of death would be a necropsy. I am very sorry for your sudden loss, I am sure you are heartbroken and frustrated.
